'Why Not Settle Down Already?' A Quantitative Analysis of the Delay in Marriage

'Why Not Settle Down Already?' A Quantitative Analysis of the Delay in Marriage
A striking change in American society in the last 40 years has been the decline and delay in marriage. The fraction of young adults who have never been married increased significantly between 1970 and 2000. Idiosyncratic labor income volatility also rose. We establish a quantitatively important link between these facts. If marriage involves consumption commitments, then a rise in income volatility delays marriage. We quantitatively assess this hypothesis vis-à-vis others in the literature. Increased volatility accounts for about 20% of the observed delay in marriage and is strong relative to other mechanisms.

Highly Educated Women are No Longer Childless

Highly Educated Women are No Longer Childless
Baudin et al. (2015) document that childlessness rates in the U.S. in 1990 exhibit a U-shaped relationship with women's education, with highly educated women much more likely to be childless than other women. We show that this is no longer true: the highly educated women's childlessness rate has converged to that of other women. We argue that these women are now able to marketize the time cost of child rearing, allowing them to have both a family and career.

Castability and Characteristics of High Cerium Aluminum Alloys

release date: Jan 01, 2018
Castability and Characteristics of High Cerium Aluminum Alloys
This chapter describes the development and the castability of near eutectic aluminum-cerium (Al-Ce) alloy systems. These alloys have good mechanical properties at high temperatures and are very castable. The castability of the binary systems is as good or better than the aluminum-silicon system with some deterioration as additional alloying elements are added. In alloy systems that use cerium in combination with common aluminum alloying elements such as silicon, magnesium, and/or copper, the casting characteristics are generally better than the aluminum-copper system. Alloying with magnesium increases room temperature strength considerably.

Mining Surplus

Mining Surplus
James A. Schmitz documents, in a well-known case study (Journal of Political Economy 113 (2005), 582-625), a dramatic rise in productivity in the American and Canadian iron-ore industry following an increase in competition from Brazil. Prior to the increased competition, the industry was not competitive. Economic profits were divided between business and unions. Schmitz attributes the increase in productivity to a change in work practices in the industry, as old negotiated union work rules were abandoned or modified. This research formalizes a mechanism through which a rise in competition can lead to increased productivity in the iron-ore industry.
