Homeland security proposal for cabinet agency has merit, but implementation will be pivotal to success
This report discusses the reorganization of government agencies and the reorientation of their missions to improve our nation's ability to better protect our homeland. It is important to recognize that this transition to a more effective homeland security approach is part of a larger transformation that the government must make to address emerging fiscal, economic, demographic, scientific, technological and other challenges of the 21st century and to meet the expectations of the American people for timely, quality and cost-effect public service. This report focuses on two major issues that Congress should review in deliberations on creating a new cabinet department principally dedicated to homeland security (1) the need for reorganization and the principles and criteria to help evaluate what agencies and missions should be included in or left out of the new Dept. of Homeland Security and (2) issues related to the transition, cost and implementation challenges of the new department.

Railroading Religion

release date: Aug 13, 2019
Railroading Religion
Railroads, tourism, and government bureaucracy combined to create modern religion in the American West, argues David Walker in this innovative study of Mormonism’s ascendency in the railroad era. The center of his story is Corinne, Utah—an end-of-the-track, hell-on-wheels railroad town founded by anti-Mormon businessmen. In the disputes over this town’s frontier survival, Walker discovers intense efforts by a variety of theological, political, and economic interest groups to challenge or secure Mormonism’s standing in the West. Though Corinne’s founders hoped to leverage industrial capital to overthrow Mormon theocracy, the town became the site of a very different dream. Economic and political victory in the West required the production of knowledge about different religious groups settling in its lands. As ordinary Americans advanced their own theories about Mormondom, they contributed to the rise of religion itself as a category of popular and scholarly imagination. At the same time, new and advantageous railroad-related alliances catalyzed LDS Church officials to build increasingly dynamic religious institutions. Through scrupulous research and wide-ranging theoretical engagement, Walker shows that western railroads did not eradicate or diminish Mormon power. To the contrary, railroad promoters helped establish Mormonism as a normative American religion.

The Making of the Inclusive School

release date: Apr 19, 2006
The Making of the Inclusive School
Inclusion is a buzzword of the 1990s. Politicians now stress their commitment to inclusion and social justice - not competition. For schools, inclusion means accepting and educating all children, irrespective of their difficulties. The new inclusive mood is about including everyone in society's institutions. It has created a growing demand for schools to find effective ways of including and teaching all children - even those who at one time would have been sent to special schools. The book combines a theoretical examination of inclusion and its rationale with the story of a group of schools in which teachers, assistants and children have striven to make inclusion happen. This new book * explores the arguments for inclusive schools * examines the international evidence about children's well-being and academic progress in inclusive schools * describes how the pioneers have developed their practice for inclusion * presents the findings of an in-depth 18 month study of a group of schools which have striven to make inclusion happen

The Monkey Endgame

release date: Nov 10, 2016
The Monkey Endgame
What happens if socialists get everything they want? What's the endgame? Political correctness makes us hesitate to speak for fear of offending someone and being marked as a hater. All we want is a rational discussion about things that affect our freedom and opportunities. The first Rule Monkeys understand the enormous responsibility entrusted to them by common monkeys. The new nation works and all are happy. Then, things change. Little Sani Dom ekes out a living with his fishing net. He sees discontent among the towns folk. Tension escalates and word of a secret meeting spreads. At the meeting, a wise old monkey provides some answers. But are these the answers the monkeys want to hear? "By logically imagining the consequences of given actions and behaviors, this simple story vaccinates the reader's mind against involuntary acceptance of liberal mandates."-From the Introduction of The Monkey Endgame (see the Look Inside feature.) Who is this book for? It's for the young adult looking for relatable-and dare I say it fun-political fiction. It's for parents who believe part of parenting involves schooling their children in the ways of politics. Use it to open a dialogue with your young adult about the nature of politics without boring them to death. You can even use the story to explore current events. It's for the parent concerned about the future freedom and opportunity left to their young adult. It's for young adults and teens wishing to avoid the social pitfalls of political correctness when discussing liberal arguments that affect their future. It' for anyone wishing to challenge the endless liberal messages and media bias that constantly push invasive government control. It's for teens who wonder about their own political affiliation. "Am I a young Republican or Democrat?" - and most importantly - "Why?" It's for young adults who already identify as conservatives, particularly with respect to socialist policies and the U.S. Constitution. What is The Monkey Endgame? It's approachable political fiction for young adults. Although it stands as a complete story on its own, it's also the first book in an upcoming political fiction book series called Freedom Sleeps. It's a book that awakens you to the countless biased messages you suffer from sources like the news, school, text books, TV shows, commercials and more. It's a story that explores false compassion and political misdirection. It's political fiction that addresses government corruption. It's a teen fable about government, society, and Rule Monkeys! Other Questions It's a short story. Why? - Good question. The story is long enough to explore major monkey mistakes, but short enough to remain interesting and understandable. Why is a book for young adults illustrated? - There are a couple reasons for including illustrations. First, the illustrations reinforce that this is not our world. We can talk honestly about cause and effects in the monkey nation, because no one will be offended. Second, illustrations are fun for any age - and these illustrations by Zack Demirtshyan draw the reader deep into the monkey world. Third, this is a fable of sorts, and fables need illustrations! Can I read some of the content? - Absolutely! Please see the "Look Inside" feature above. The included section here will give you a better understanding of the content. "The Monkey Endgame draws its own conclusions in story form, but you don't have to agree with them. The point is for young minds to think for themselves rather than accept media bias as fact."
