The Refugee System

release date: Sep 29, 2022
The Refugee System
Some people facing violence and persecution flee. Others stay. How do households in danger decide who should go, where to relocate, and whether to keep moving? What are the conditions in countries of origin, transit, and reception that shape people''s options? This incisive book tells the story of how one Syrian family, spread across several countries, tried to survive the civil war and live in dignity. This story forms a backdrop to explore and explain the refugee system. Departing from studies that create siloes of knowledge about just one setting or ""solution"" to displacement, the book''s sociological approach describes a global system that shapes refugee movements. Changes in one part of the system reverberate elsewhere. Feedback mechanisms change processes across time and place. Earlier migrations shape later movements. Immobility on one path redirects migration along others. Past policies, laws, population movements, and regional responses all contribute to shape states’ responses in the present. As Arar and FitzGerald illustrate, all these processes are forged by deep inequalities of economic, political, military, and ideological power. Presenting a sharp analysis of refugee structures worldwide, this book offers invaluable insights for students and scholars of international migration and refugee studies across the social sciences, as well as policy makers and those involved in refugee and asylum work.

Curriculum Reform in the European Schools

release date: May 29, 2018
Curriculum Reform in the European Schools
This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This open access book examines the modern role of the European School system within the European Union, at a time when the global economy demands a new vision for contemporary education. The European schools are currently in a state of crisis: their 60-year-old tradition of bilingual and multilingual education is being strained by rapid EU expansion and the removal of English speaking teachers as a result of Brexit. Their tried and tested model of mathematics and science education has rapidly been overtaken by new developments in pedagogy and assessment research, while recruitment and retention of students and teachers has become increasingly fraught as European member states review what they are, and what they are not, prepared to fund. The authors draw on original and empirical research to assess the European Schools’ place in a new Europe where the entire post-war European Project is potentially at risk. This well-researched volume will be of interest to practitioners working in European schools as well as students and scholars of EU politics and international education.

Politics and War in the Three Stuart Kingdoms, 1637-49

release date: Mar 14, 2017
Politics and War in the Three Stuart Kingdoms, 1637-49
The 1640s were one of the most exciting and bloody decades in British and Irish history. This book interweaves the narrative threads in each theatre of conflict to provide an holistic account and analysis of the wars in and between England, Scotland and Ireland, from the Covenanter Rebellion to the execution of Charles I. Politics and War in the Three Stuart Kingdoms, 1637-49 - Stresses the need to examine the English Civil War within the context of the other conflicts in Scotland and Ireland, and vice versa - Explores key themes, such as the relationship between armies and elites - Assesses the extent to which the wars in and between the kingdoms were the product of religious and ethnic hatred Using a wide range of original and secondary sources, and incorporating the latest research, David Scott offers a challenging new interpretation of political structure and dynamics in the warring Stuart realms.

Omens of Adversity

release date: Dec 18, 2013
Omens of Adversity
Omens of Adversity is a profound critique of the experience of postcolonial, postsocialist temporality. The case study at its core is the demise of the Grenada Revolution (1979–1983), and the repercussions of its collapse. In the Anglophone Caribbean, the Grenada Revolution represented both the possibility of a break from colonial and neocolonial oppression, and hope for egalitarian change and social and political justice. The Revolution''s collapse in 1983 was devastating to a revolutionary generation. In hindsight, its demise signaled the end of an era of revolutionary socialist possibility. Omens of Adversity is not a history of the Revolution or its fallout. Instead, by examining related texts and phenomena, David Scott engages with broader, enduring issues of political action and tragedy, generations and memory, liberalism and transitional justice, and the possibility of forgiveness. Ultimately, Scott argues that the palpable sense of the neoliberal present as time stalled, without hope for emancipatory futures, has had far-reaching effects on how we think about the nature of political action and justice.

The Celtic Spider

release date: Jan 02, 2018
The Celtic Spider
A stage play in three acts. It is the height of the "Celtic Tiger" boom in Ireland and Jean and his father work as painters, busily painting the many new houses springing up as the housing industry explodes. However beneath this seemingly perfect world is a dark underbelly of corruption and incest. Jean''s shady uncle, living in his attic laboratory, has genetically developed Ireland''s first poisonous spider, a deadly creature that is evolving hourly. As Ireland''s mythical and cultural past retreats from this toxic world, Jean is bitten by the spider and his ever-distracted and disillusioned father plots the last supper. The Celtic Spider is a surreal and nightmarish examination of the rot that exists beneath economic boom and controversially criticises an Ireland that is losing its soul. Written and performed in 2007, The Celtic Spider, at times deeply profound and farcically humorous, prophesied the doom of the coming years of total economic and spiritual collapse.

David Scott criticizes the implementation of neo-liberal policies and practices in education systems round the world, management and control system approaches, and empiricist/positivist research agendas. The book offers an account of a new education model, which is directly in opposition to agendas currently supported by the right of the political spectrum. It will be of interest to teachers and students of education, the education research community, practising and trainee teachers, and education policy makers.

The Civil Law Tradition

release date: Jan 01, 1994
The Civil Law Tradition
Intended for use in introductory courses in comparative law or civil law systems, this book is the successor edition to John Henry Merryman and David S. Clark, Comparative Law: Western European and Latin American Legal Systems (1978). It is a successor edition rather than a second edition because it reflects the truly fundamental changes that have occurred in the relationships among the world''s major legal systems during the past 16 years. First, the book recognizes the contribution of the civil law tradition to contemporary national systems in East Asia, Japan being the principal example. Second, the enlarged, 16 member-nation European Union, along with Japan and new industrial nations of East Asia and the United States, have become the principal players in world affairs. Third, with the decline of Soviet socialism has come a decline in significance in Soviet law. Fourth, one cannot ignore the increased presence of Latin America in our new multipolar world.
