Judder and Company

release date: Jan 14, 2016
Judder and Company
This is a purely imaginary tale of the events that followed when a group of middle aged and thoroughly bored ex squaddies, albeit most of them senior NCO''s, got together and decided to put some ginger back in their lives again before the wooden overcoats and the fiery furnaces - or the muddy holes in the ground - overtook them permanently! Seizing the moral high ground, (mainly to assuage their consciences), they declare that any financial gain accruing from their rather bold enterprises would be strictly secondary and that the main purpose of it all was to hone their somewhat rusty military skills and provide them with a purpose in life once again, a reason for living, if you will! Needless to say however, things don''t quite go according to plan and the verisimilitudous veterans eventually find themselves suspended on the horns of a moral dilemma with no clear indication of which way to fall, and even less of an idea of what to do when they land! However, they deal with these problems as they arise and in the same way as they have dealt with most other problems in their lives - head on, and by forging other strange and unlikely but wholesome, relationships along the way on their journey through life.

The Power of Pause

release date: Dec 16, 2024
The Power of Pause
In our modern world, screens have become an inseparable part of life, consuming hours of our attention every day. While technology enhances convenience and connectivity, excessive screen time often comes at a cost to our mental, physical, and emotional health. Reclaiming Your Life in the Digital Age serves as a practical and inspiring roadmap for reducing screen dependence and rediscovering the joy of real-world experiences. The book opens with an exploration of the pervasive impact of screen time on the brain. It examines how constant notifications, endless scrolling, and digital multitasking drain mental energy, impair focus, and contribute to stress and anxiety. The author weaves in research on how screens alter sleep patterns, reduce face-to-face communication skills, and weaken the capacity for mindfulness and creativity. These insights provide a sobering foundation, motivating readers to reevaluate their relationship with screens. Central to the book is a step-by-step program for embracing intentional screen usage. The approach begins with a self-assessment to identify the triggers, patterns, and purposes behind excessive screen time. This self-awareness sets the stage for readers to adopt new habits. Techniques include implementing screen-free zones at home, creating "digital Sabbaths" once a week, and replacing passive scrolling with active, fulfilling activities such as journaling, exercise, hobbies, or outdoor exploration. Readers learn how to resist social media comparison traps by fostering gratitude and a deeper connection to their own lives. The book emphasizes the benefits of reduced screen time for mental clarity, enhanced relationships, and an improved ability to be present. It encourages parents to model healthy technology use and to create family routines that strengthen bonds. The narrative highlights success stories from individuals who transformed their well-being by cutting down on digital distractions. Interspersed with actionable tips, mindfulness exercises, and recommendations for striking a healthy balance between online and offline worlds, Reclaiming Your Life in the Digital Age empowers readers to regain control of their time. It offers an optimistic reminder that the real world, with all its vivid textures, relationships, and opportunities for growth, remains a vibrant alternative to the glow of a screen. In the end, the book argues for a mindful approach to technology: one where screens enhance rather than diminish well-being. Readers are left with an actionable toolkit and the encouragement to embark on a sustainable journey toward a more meaningful, connected, and screen-moderated life.

The Crags
This is a short story about a chance meeting between two men on Edinburgh''s Salisbury Crags during an overcast November afternoon and which indirectly leads them on a trail of revenge, taking them into some dark (literally and metaphorically speaking) places, jeopardising their physical health as well as their very souls! This state of affairs is brought about by the untimely suicide of one of the men''s son some seventeen years previously which incidentally causes them to form an enduring friendship and sets them off on a voyage of discovery, both about the world and themselves, and resulting in them finding themselves in places they would rather not be in, and with people (some of whom) they would rather not be with.

The Haunting

release date: Jul 18, 2014
The Haunting
A short tale of the supernatural which takes place in middle England in the early 1930''s. It (hopefully) stretches the reader''s imagination and challenges them to question their beliefs in things that are not so easily, or cannot be, explained! Gracchus Hall and all the characters are strictly figments of the Author''s imagination although the general locale is based "somewhere" in the Yorkshire Dales. The secondary theme of a quest for hidden treasure is also completely imaginary and is no more than a means to an end simply to add a bit of structure and direction. D.P.

Adverse Digestion
"This study aims to instigate serious consideration of the effects that an environment overly saturated with advertising may have on human beings. The research and subsequent ideology are presented in a creative non-fiction format that includes both quantitative figures and factual information imbedded in contemplative prose. After a brief introduction, the writing is divided into five sections that discuss concerns regarding advertising that arose during and were developed after a six-month observation and research period. The sections guide the reader through some of the permanent milestones in the development of the modern advertisement and eventually reach conclusions or predictions regarding the future of the advertising based on current trends and patents. Some of the key elements of this discussion include the effects of subconscious ingestion of advertising of a long period of time, the role of advertising in shaping our culture, the effects of advertising on the content in which the advertising is embedded, advertising and social media and the future of data-mining in advertising. This study presents ideas that are backed by factual information and is presented with a personal and reflective responses to the findings within that is meant to bring a sense of humanity to the subject, in the hope that it might increase the impact of the argument. A major goal of this study revolves around highlighting the un-provable theory that the future of advertising might be detrimental to our ability to think freely and independently. By including societal and socio-economical, philosophical, and technical elements to this context, I aimed to cover iv a wide range of ideas in this discussion. A number of images have been created to accompany the text for the purposes of emphasizing points made within the text regarding the design of modern advertising, the messaging present in graphic imagery, and the placement of such advertisements." - abstract
