Neben der qualitativen Sichtweise von Bildung wird auch die "ökonomische Bedeutung von Bildung" (Ammermüller & Dohmen 2004: 7) immer stärker diskutiert. Ausgangspunkt dieser Diskussion ist die Grundthese der Humankapitaltheorie, wonach sich die Produktivität eines Arbeiters dann erhöht, wenn Investitionen in das Humankapital z.B. durch Ausbildung vorgenommen werden (vgl. Sesselmeier & Blauermel 1998: 66). Eine höhere Produktivität führt im Regelfall zu steigendem Einkommen, was sowohl "für die Person" (Ammermüller & Dohmen 2004: 8) selbst, aber auch für die gesamte "Gesellschaft" (Ammermüller & Dohmen 2004: 9) von Vorteil ist. Mit dem Konzept der Bildungsrenditen wurde nun ein Konzept geschaffen, mit dem der ökonomische Wert von Bildung geschätzt werden kann. Durch diese Schätzungen wird ein direkter Vergleich von Investitionen und Erträgen ermöglicht. Aus diesem Vergleich kann dann eine Entscheidung resultieren, ob sich eine weitere Schulausbildung für einen Akteur lohnt oder ob ein Eintritt in die berufliche Ausbildung sinnvoller ist. Eine zweite Möglichkeit zur Nutzung dieser Schätzung reicht bis hin zu einem internationalen Vergleich der Bildungserträge. Durch die Berechnung von Bildungsrenditen in verschiedenen Ländern kann direkt verglichen werden, in welchem Land höhere Erträge und in welchem Land geringere Erträge bei gleicher Schulbildung zu erwarten sind. This anonymous manuscript play has long been the subject of scholarly dispute regarding its relationship with Shakespeare''s Richard II.
