The King of God's Kingdom

release date: Jan 01, 2002
The King of God's Kingdom
This book addresses the problems raised by biblical scholarship concerning Jesus and his mission. Much of Jesus'' ministry remains a mystery; many of the things he said and did do not fit neatly into traditional Christian interpretation. He spoke of the coming of the kingdom of God but what become of this new age which was meant to be tangible and near? The King of God''s Kingdom in part is an attempt to uncover and understand Jesus and His vision. At the same time, Seccombe inspires confidence in the historical Jesus, overcoming much of the confusion that has been created in the last two hundred years. With conviction of the urgency of these issues for the Christian faith today, he presents a solution to the puzzle in the form of an account of Jesus'' ministry years.

Values as a Moderator of the Influence of Violence Exposure on Beliefs about Aggression

release date: Jan 01, 2007
Values as a Moderator of the Influence of Violence Exposure on Beliefs about Aggression
Violence prevention efforts for youth are benefited by research that seeks further understanding of the factors influencing aggressive behavior. These factors include aggressive beliefs and violence exposure. This study was designed to explore the potential role of values in moderating the impact of violence exposure on aggressive beliefs among a sample of male high school age youth. It was hypothesized that the youth endorsement of prosocial values and subsequent rejection of individually-focused values like achievement, hedonism, and security will buffer the effect of community violence exposure on reported increases in aggressive beliefs. Findings from the study replicated Schwartz (2004) theory of values and showed support for the relationship of community violence exposure to aggressive beliefs. Only rejection of Achievement values demonstrated a buffering influence in the relationship of community violence and aggressive beliefs. Also included is a review of the limitation associated with sampling methods and response bias in considering the implications of this study and the promise of prosocial values as a protective factor.

Air Demand in Free Flowing Gated Conduits

release date: Jan 01, 2008
Air Demand in Free Flowing Gated Conduits
A physical experimental setup of a circular, gated closed conduit was built at the Utah Water Research Laboratory (UWRL). Setup configurations were modified and data were measured to aid in the study of physical variables on air demand. It was determined that gate opening, gate and water surface roughness, and conduit length all were significant variables on the air demand measured through the conduit air vent. It was also determined that no noticeable air velocity profile existed above the air-water interface. A linear relationship was found between the air flow rate to water flow rate ratio (air- demand ratio) and head-to-gate height ratio when identical conduit geometry was used. Data obtained from this study illustrated that the use of the Froude number is an incomplete way to quantify air demand due to the effects of changing conduit geometry.

Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type-1 Trans-activator of Transcription (HIV-1 Tat), Random Mutagenesis and Interaction with PKR.

release date: Jan 01, 1997
Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type-1 Trans-activator of Transcription (HIV-1 Tat), Random Mutagenesis and Interaction with PKR.
The etiologic agent of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, human immunodeficiency virus, encodes a regulatory protein termed "trans-activator of transcription" or Tat. The critical role that Tat plays in viral replication makes this protein an attractive drug discovery target, yet knowledge regarding the molecular basis for the actions of Tat is incomplete. A new method for random saturation mutagenesis was modelled by Monte Carlo simulation and then applied to the HIV-1 tat gene. Analysis of clones isolated from the resultant mutant tat cDNA library revealed the critical primary sequence requirements for Tat trans-activation. Two-exon Tat was shown to be phosphorylated on serine-62 and threonine-64 by the cellular protein kinase PKR, whereas one-exon Tat was found to inhibit PKR in eukaryotic cells, revealing a potential escape mechanism for HIV-1 from the antiviral effects of interferon.
