Leve as Pessoas Consigo
Brands, Novak desenvolveu o programa «Taking People with You», e ensina-o a milhares de líderes em todo o mundo.

Jewish Justice

release date: Mar 01, 2017
Jewish Justice
In Jewish Justice David Novak explores the continuing role of Judaism for crafting ethics, politics, and theology. Drawing on sources as diverse as the Bible, the Talmud, and ancient, medieval, and modern philosophy, Novak asserts Judaism''s integral place in communal discourse of the public square. According to Novak, biblical revelation has universal implications--that it is ultimately God''s law to humanity because humans made in God''s image are capable of making intelligent moral choices. The universality of this claim, however, stands in tension with the particularities of Jewish monotheism (one God, one people, one law). Novak''s challenge is for Judaism to capitalize on the way God''s law transcends particularity without destroying difference. Thus it is as Jews that Jews are called to join communities across the faithful denominations, as well as secular ones, to engage in debates about the common good. Jewish Justice follows a logical progression from grounded ethical quandaries to larger philosophical debates. Novak begins by considering the practical issues of capital punishment, mutilation and torture, corporate crime, the landed status of communities and nations, civil marriage, and religious marriage. He next moves to a consideration of theoretical concerns: God''s universal justice, the universal aim of particular Jewish ethics, human rights and the image of God, the relation of post-Enlightenment social contract theory to the recently enfranchised Jewish community, and the voices of Jewish citizens in secular politics and the public sphere. Novak also explores the intersection of universality and particularity by examining the practice of interfaith dialogue among Jews, Christians, and Muslims.

In Defense of Religious Liberty

release date: Jan 01, 2009
In Defense of Religious Liberty
In Defense of Religious Liberty contains David Novak''s vigorous--and paradoxical--argument that the primacy of divine law is the best foundation for a secular, multicultural democracy. Novak presents his claim, which will astound both liberal and conservative advocates of democracy, in political, philosophical, and theological terms. He shows how the universal norms of divine law are knowable as natural law, that they are the best formulations of the human rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, and that their assertion includes an explicit recognition of God as cosmic lawgiver. Furthermore, Novak maintains that the seemingly disparate ideas of divine command, natural law, and human rights can be integrated into one overall political theory. Novak reveals this integration at work in the classical texts of his own Jewish tradition, as well as in the canonical philosophical tradition of the West, from Plato to the Stoics to Grotius to Kant. He also convincingly makes the case that those who reject any legitimate role for religion in discussions of public morality inevitably substitute arbitrary human power for divine command, arbitrary positive law for natural law, and arbitrary governmental entitlements for human rights that exist prior to the establishment of the state. Novak concludes that religious traditions like Judaism, precisely because they incorporate the doctrines of God the cosmic lawgiver, natural law, and human rights, provide the most coherent ontological foundation for democracy in today''s world.

A Descriptive and Exploratory Analysis of Occupational Injuries at a Chemical Manufacturing Facility

release date: Jan 01, 1989
A Descriptive and Exploratory Analysis of Occupational Injuries at a Chemical Manufacturing Facility
A retrospective study of 1353 occupational injuries occurring at a chemical manufacturing facility in Houston, Texas from January, 1982 through May, 1988 was performed to investigate the etiology of the occupational injury process. Injury incidence rates were calculated for various sub-populations of workers to determine differences in the risk of injury for various groups. Linear modeling techniques were used to determine the association between certain collected independent variables and severity of an injury event. Finally, two sub-groups of the worker population, shiftworkers and injury recidivists, were examined. An injury recidivist as defined is any worker experiencing one or more injury per year. Overall, female shiftworkers evidenced the highest average injury incidence rate compared to all other worker groups analyzed. Although the female shiftworkers were younger and less experienced, the etiology of their increased risk of injury remains unclear, although the rigors of performing shiftwork itself or ergonomic factors are suspect. In general, females were injured more frequently than males, but they did not incur more severe injuries. For all workers, many injuries were caused by erroneous or foregone training, and risk taking behaviors. Injuries of these types are avoidable. The distribution of injuries by severity level was bimodal; either injuries were of minor or major severity with only a small number of cases falling in between. Of the variables collected, only the type of injury incurred and the worker''s titlecode were statistically significantly associated with injury severity. Shiftworkers did not sustain more severe injuries than other worker groups. Injury to shiftworkers varied as a 24-hour pattern; the greatest number occurred between 1200-1230 hours, (p = 0.002) by Cosinor analysis. Recidivists made up 3.3% of the population (23 males and 10 females), yet suffered 17.8% of the injuries. Although past research suggests that injury recidivism is a random statistical event, analysis of the data by logistic regression implicates gender, area worked, age and job titlecode as being statistically significantly related to injury recidivism at this facility.
