Features of Declarative and Nondeclarative Memory

release date: Jan 01, 1993
Features of Declarative and Nondeclarative Memory
It has proved useful to view memory in terms of distinct biological systems falling into two broad categories: declarative (or conscious or explicit) memory and nondeclarative (or nonconscious or implicit) memory. This present findings concern some important aspects of declarative and nondeclarative memory. Experiment 1 was a study of forgetting from declarative memory in diencephalic and medial temporal lobe amnesic patients. Subjects studied 120 pictures (controls: 1 s/item; amnesics: 8 s/item), and then took four tests of recognition memory after 10-min, 2-hr, and 30-32 hr delays. Contrary to early reports, the forgetting rate was not faster in medial temporal lobe than diencephalic amnesia. Also, amnesic patients did not perform better when identifying new items instead of old items. The next three experiments were based on a visual paired comparison task. Subjects saw 24 consecutive pairs of pictures, two identical items/pair, and later saw another 24 pairs of pictures, a previously studied and a novel item in each pair. Viewing times for new and old items (measured by a highly reliable method) indicated that novelty preference occurred in normal subjects, that it lasted only a few hours, and that it was impaired in amnesia (i.e., that task performance in humans relies on declarative memory). Finally, a fame judgment task was used to study aspects of nondeclarative memory. Subjects pronounced names of famous and nonfamous people and then judged the fame of some of those names, together with new names. For normal subjects, a ''famous'' decision was more likely for old names than new names. Equivalent gains occurred for famous and nonfamous names. The effect for nonfamous names was undisrupted by recombining the first and last names between study and test. Most importantly, the fame judgment effect was completely intact in amnesia. The results suggest that the effect (1) involves nondeclarative memory, (2) occurs for information without a preexisting representation, and (3) does not require a new association to be formed between first and last names at study. A context is described for applying all of the present findings to some issues concerning the neurobiology of memory.
