Je suis fait comme ça. Pourquoi telle forme et pas telle autre ? Pourquoi de l''acier et pas du béton ou de la pierre ? Pourquoi l''utiliser à cet endroit précis plutôt que là...? En me posant ce type de questions, j''étais ramené aux processus élémentaires de la conception architecturale, c''est-à-dire aux questions qu''ingénieurs et architectes se posent quand ils s''efforcent d''identifier et de hiérarchiser les problèmes à résoudre. Et c''est cet aspect particulier des grandes constructions qui m''a finalement convaincu qu''un " manuel " comme celui-ci avait sa raison d''être. Ce livre s''intéresse aux rapports entre les problèmes à résoudre dans la phase initiale du projet et les solutions qui sont finalement mises en œuvre. Il y a quelque chose de rassurant dans le fait que ces structures, dont la taille peut nous enthousiasmer ou nous intimider, sont toujours le résultat de raisonnements logiques et donc accessibles à tous. Une fois qu''on a compris que le sens commun et la logique jouent dans ce processus un rôle au moins aussi important que l''imagination et le savoir-faire technique, les constructions les plus gigantesques retrouvent leur dimension humaine.
