The Clinton Syndrome

release date: Jan 01, 1998
The Clinton Syndrome
Even before the release of The Starr Report (ISBN 0-7615-1960-2), people across America were asking why President Clinton would engage in such risky behavior. In The Clinton Syndrome, Dr. Jerome D. Levin, a highly respected addiction therapist, explores Clinton''s past and finds a pattern of destructive relationships consistent with classic sexual addiction.

Couple and Family Therapy of Addiction

release date: Jan 01, 1998
Couple and Family Therapy of Addiction
This is a comprehensive clinical resource for addiction counselors who want to learn about the psychological components of the problem, for individual therapists--dynamic, cognitive, and behavioral--who want to understand systems approaches in order to draw on a broader repertoire of useful interventions, and for couple and family therapists who want to learn more about the intrapsychic, biological, and pharmacological aspects of addiction. Dr. Jerome D. Levin takes the reader down the parallel paths of addiction treatment and individual and family therapy until they meet on the bridge of actual clinical practice. Practitioner, professor, prolific author, and respected authority in the field, Dr. Levin uses approaches to the treatment of alcoholism as a model for illustrating how theory, research, technique, and flying by the seat of the professional pants can integrate into a therapeutic style to help substance abusers and their partners and families.

Slings and Arrows
Levin examines what therapists can do to help the victims of narcissistic wounds to integrate, mourn, and heal them. He shows the nature of the injuries to each party and considers ways to minimize them, since treatment itself can seem an injury to both patient and therapist.

Optimal Inspection Policies for Deteriorating Markov Processes

Optimal Inspection Policies for Deteriorating Markov Processes
A model is presented of a Markov process whose state is unknown except when an inspection is performed. The evolution of the process is governed by fixed transition probability matrices P and Q under non-inspection and inspection, respectively. The costs of inspection and non-inspection depend on the current state. The objective is to characterize inspection policies which minimize expected total discounted cost. The following specific models are presented. Model I is a process which starts in state 0 and is terminated when, on inspection, the state is found to exceed some fixed value M. In Model II the process is repaired (reverts to state 0) when the state at inspection exceeds M. Simple conditions are given which imply that the optimal inspection interval is a non-increasing function of the last observed state. Model III is an inventory process with uncertain supply as well as demand. Given order size n, the number received is Binomial (n;p). Costs of ordering, storage, and shortage are incorporated. In the single period case, conditions are given which imply that the optimal order size is non-increasing in current inventory. This result extends to the undiscounted multiperiod case provided the holding cost is zero. A counterexample is given for a two period case with linear, non-zero holding, shortage, and ordering costs. (Author).
