Abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine what factors are most effective in helping individuals maintain long-term sobriety and abstinence from drug and alcohol abuse once they have completed treatment. A total of 15 recovering alcoholics and drug addicts were interviewed using an interview guide developed by the researcher. Making a self-motivated choice to get clean and sober was the reason most frequently reported by the participants for enrolling in substance abuse treatment. All respondents reported that the 12-step program was their main strategy for maintaining their recovery. The majority of respondents reported that working with a sponsor and having a sober network of friends were important contributors to the maintenance of sobriety. Most respondents believed that the ideal program would have a combination of a medically supervised detox, in-depth therapy, and a spiritual component. One implication is that social workers should be familiar with the 12-step model.
