Year's Best Hardcore Horror Volume 1

release date: Jun 01, 2016
Year's Best Hardcore Horror Volume 1
"Not for the faint of heart or weak of stomach, the 19 stories in this new best-of annual anthology feature episodes of graphic gore and violence—including torture, dismemberment, self-mutilation, and home abortion—that are designed to push buttons as well as boundaries...strictly for hardcore horror fans."—Publishers Weekly Excerpt from the Introduction: Editors Randy Chandler and Cheryl Mullenax put the call out to horror writers and editors of extreme stories, the hardcore stuff that breaks boundaries and trashes taboos, the transgressive tales you can''t "unread" (as Chuck Palahniuk says). We staked out our territory and nailed this to the wall to guide us: YEAR''S BEST HARDEST HORROR Not your mama''s best-of horror annual. This stuff comes from the edge of the abyss, stories you read at your own risk because you feel the abyss looking right back into you through the tainted lens of each twisted tale. Some of the stories you''ll find here are loaded with very graphic descriptions of violence, sex and depravities, while others may contain only one shocking moment of brutality. In others, the hardcore aspect may be less graphic and subtler than you might expect. Some of these quieter tales offer the reader some time to recover from the more disturbing ones preceding. Most of the stories collected here are from small and specialty press anthologies, with a few from periodicals, like the prestigious Splatterpunk Zine in the UK and Thuglit here in the US. Bizarro is also represented with a couple of tales from the unlikely anthology Blood For You: A Literary Tribute To GG Allin from Weirdpunk Books. (If you''re not familiar with the late GG Allin, you can find snippets from some of his outrageous and obscene punk shows online, which will increase your appreciation of those two tales.) So for now, forget about that neighbor you suspect is a serial killer, don''t worry about the drunk driver that could take you out on your next trip to the store, push those troubling news stories to the back of your mind and immerse yourself in the imaginary horrors at hand. But don''t be surprised if you sense something dark staring back at you from between the lines. That is to be expected when you enter these forbidding realms. With any luck, you may find something useful to help you survive the approaching Apocalypse. Art, Myth and Society in Hegel's Aesthetics

release date: Nov 03, 2011
Art, Myth and Society in Hegel's Aesthetics
Art, Myth and Society in Hegel''s Aesthetics returns to the student transcripts of Hegel''s lectures on aesthetics, which have yet to be translated into English and in some cases remain unpublished. David James develops the idea that these transcripts show that Hegel was primarily interested in understanding art as an historical phenomenon and, more specifically, in terms of its role in the ethical life of various peoples. This involves relating Hegel''s aesthetics to his philosophies of right and history, rather than to his logic or metaphysics. The book thus offers a thorough re-evaluation of Hegel''s aesthetics and its relation to his theory of objective spirit, exposing the ways in which Hegel''s views on this subject are anchored in his reflections on history and on different forms of ethical life.

The Subversive Edge of Psychoanalysis

release date: Nov 08, 2024
The Subversive Edge of Psychoanalysis
The Subversive Edge of Psychoanalysis examines the radical and non-conformist perspectives of both classical and contemporary psychoanalysis. The chapters included in this book span the course of David James Fisher’s career. They contextualize significant cases from the recent history of psychoanalysis, critically analyze key aspects of psychoanalytic work, consider the role of psychoanalysis in the history of the twentieth century, and provide biographical sketches of major figures in the field. The book concludes with a cogent interview of the author by a distinguished psychohistorian, depicting how subjectivity, family themes, politics, and cultural affinities marked his choice of subject matter and methodology, his identifications, and his antipathies. The Subversive Edge of Psychoanalysis will appeal to mental health professionals and students with an interest in psychoanalytic practice and theory and academics and researchers who are fascinated by the subversive, non-conforming aspects of both classical and contemporary psychoanalysis.

Practical Necessity, Freedom, and History

release date: Jan 01, 2021
Practical Necessity, Freedom, and History
By means of careful analysis of relevant writings by Hobbes, Rousseau, Kant, Hegel, and Marx, David James argues that the concept of practical necessity is key to understanding the nature and extent of human freedom. Practical necessity means being, or believing oneself to be, constrained to perform certain actions in the absence (whether real or imagined) of other, more attractive options, or by the high costs involved in pursuing other options. Agents become subject to practical necessity as a result of economic, social, and historical forces over which they have, or appear to have, no effective control, and the extent to which they are subject to it varies according to the amount of economic and social power that one agent possesses relative to other agents. The concept of practical necessity is also shown to take into account how the beliefs and attitudes of social agents are in large part determined by social and historical processes in which they are caught up, and that the type of motivation that we attribute to agents must recognize this. Practical Necessity, Freedom, and History: From Hobbes to Marx shows how Rousseau, Kant, Hegel, and Marx, in contrast to Hobbes, explain the emergence of the conditions of a free society in terms of a historical process that is initially governed by practical necessity. The role that this form of necessity plays in explaining history necessity invites the following question: to what extent are historical agents genuinely subject to both practical and historical necessity?

Fichte's Republic

release date: Oct 09, 2015
Fichte's Republic
The Addresses to the German Nation (1808) is one of Fichte''s best-known works. It is also his most controversial work because of its nationalist elements. In this book, David James places this text and its nationalism within the context provided by Fichte''s philosophical, educational and moral project of creating a community governed by pure practical reason, in which his own foundational philosophical science or Wissenschaftslehre could achieve general recognition. Rather than marking a break in Fichte''s philosophy, the Addresses to the German Nation and some lesser-known texts from the same period are shown to develop themes already present in his earlier writings. The themes discussed include the opposition between idealism and dogmatism, the role of Fichte''s ''popular'' lectures and writings in leading individuals to the standpoint of idealism, the view of history demanded by idealism and the role of the state in history.

Hegel's Philosophy of Right

release date: Apr 01, 2007
Hegel's Philosophy of Right
In this important new book, David James offers an innovative interpretation of a key element of Hegel''s political thought. James seeks to identify the basic aims of Hegel''s philosophy of right through an analysis of his approach to subjectivity. He argues that the basic aim of Hegel''s philosophy of right is to accommodate subjectivity within a framework of universally valid ethical norms and that an analysis of how Hegel attempts to do this provides a key to understanding his philosophy of right. This in turn makes possible a highly unified interpretation of the project that determines the shape and structure of his theory of modern ethical life. The ways in which Hegel uses the term subjectivity have never before been analysed in sufficient detail. James shows that Hegel''s understanding of this term depends very much on the context in which he is using it and by analysing this carefully shows that this concept is essentially related to his theory of freedom. This fascinating book offers a unified interpretation of Hegel''s philosophy of right and will make an important contribution to the study of Hegel''s political thought.

Hegel: A Guide for the Perplexed

release date: Mar 08, 2007
Hegel: A Guide for the Perplexed
Continuum''s Guides for the Perplexed are clear, concise and accessible introductions to thinkers, writers and subjects that students and readers can find especially challenging. Concentrating specifically on what it is that makes the subject difficult to fathom, these books explain and explore key themes and ideas, guiding the reader towards a thorough understanding of demanding material. George Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel is a philosopher of major and enduring influence. The author of The Phenomenology of Spirit and Foundations of the Philosophy of Right, cornerstones of the philosophical canon, he will be encountered by anyone studying or interested in Western philosophy. Hegel: A Guide for the Perplexed offers an invaluable introduction to Hegel''s thought. David James employs the concept of freedom to offer a unified account of the most important parts of his philosophical system: his theory of intersubjectivity; his theory of the modern state; his accounts of art and religion; and his idea of a speculative logic. This accessible but authoritative text places Hegel in an historical context, exploring his engagement with thinkers including Fichte, Jacobi and Rousseau. This is a comprehensive and coherent introduction, ideal for anyone studying this fascinating thinker.

Illustrated with more than 200 color stills, concept paintings, costume designs, album art, and archival photographs. Twenty-five years after first bringing Broadway audiences to their feet, the Tony Award-winning musical sensation Dreamgirls comes to the big screen, starring Academy Award® winner Jamie Foxx (Ray), BeyoncÉ Knowles (Austin Powers in Goldmember), Eddie Murphy (The Nutty Professor, Dr. Dolittle), Danny Glover (Lethal Weapon), Jennifer Hudson (American Idol), and Tony Award winner Anika Noni Rose (Broadway''s Caroline or Change). Set in the turbulent 1960s to mid-70s, Dreamgirls follows the rise of a trio of women-Deena (BeyoncÉ Knowles), Effie (Jennifer Hudson), and Lorrell (Anika Noni Rose)-who have formed a promising singing group called The Dreamettes. At a talent competition, they are discovered by an ambitious manager named Curtis Taylor Jr. (Jamie Foxx), who offers them the opportunity of a lifetime: to become the back-up singers for headliner James "Thunder" Early (Eddie Murphy). Curtis gradually takes control of the girls'' look and sound, eventually giving them their own shot in the spotlight as The Dreams. That spotlight, however, begins to narrow in on Deena, finally pushing the less attractive Effie out altogether. Though The Dreams become a crossover phenomenon, they soon realize that the cost of fame and fortune may be higher than they ever imagined.
