A useful tool to assist managers when planning an optimum stand establishment density, and in the planning of the timing and extent of thinning, is the density management diagram (DMD). The DMD enables stand development pathways for even-aged pure-species stands to be evaluated for naturally regenerated or planted stands, or for those regenerated by seeding. This paper presents DMDs for red pine (Pinus resinosa Ait.) and white pine (P. strobus L.), with theoretical background on DMDs and examples to assist in using the diagrams. The work presented is part of a larger project to develop a series of DMDs for commercially valuable forest species in Ontario.
