Literature, Immigration, and Diaspora in Fin-de-Siecle England

release date: May 14, 2014
Literature, Immigration, and Diaspora in Fin-de-Siecle England
The 1905 Aliens Act was the first modern law to restrict immigration to British shores. In this book, David Glover asks how it was possible for Britain, a nation that had prided itself on offering asylum to refugees, to pass such legislation. Tracing the ways that the legal notion of the "alien" became a national-racist epithet indistinguishable from the figure of "the Jew," Glover argues that the literary and popular entertainments of fin de siecle Britain perpetuated a culture of xenophobia. Reconstructing the complex socio-political field known as "the alien question," Glover examines the work of George Eliot, Israel Zangwill, Rudyard Kipling, and Joseph Conrad, together with forgotten writers like Margaret Harkness, Edgar Wallace, and James Blyth. By linking them to the beliefs and ideologies that circulated via newspapers, periodicals, political meetings, Royal Commissions, patriotic melodramas, and social surveys, Glover sheds new light on dilemmas about nationality, borders, and citizenship that remain vital today.

Born Out of Pain
David Glover unpacks his life''s path in his memoir Born Out of Pain. It is his testimony, his biography of the ails and trials he endured. With transparency and humor, David shares a collection of the events, a compilation, where he portrays who he is. To understand how he arrived at his current place in his life, he had to go to the beginning. David had a feminine spirit. As a child, he didn''t have friends and wasn''t close with his family. His only escape was a dysfunctional church and his rocky relationship with God. After he left his hometown, David was constantly plagued by his dreams about traumatic occurrences his in childhood, memories from his past he suppressed. The memories he couldn''t deal with began to seep from the dark hidden places into the light of his consciousness and his tormenting thoughts moved into his dreams. On the day he heard, "Write it out," he found that journaling was a therapeutic way to channel his emotions, especially after an overpowering night of dreams. He typed? You will be inspired by David''s story of personal resilience, leaps in faith, and a belief that his life could be better. Despite his childhood tribulations, David pressed forward to become the man he is today. He ultimately followed God, restored their relationship, and his prayers were answered.
