Sit-ins and Freedom Rides

release date: Jan 01, 2009
Sit-ins and Freedom Rides
Though people such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks are often credited with the success of the civil rights movement, thousands of others staged their own grassroots campaigns to help and segregation in America. In 1960, four students of North Carolina A & T university staged as sit-in at a whites-only lunch counter. Despite fears of arrest, beatings, or worse, the four spent the day at the counter, quietly and politely. The next day, they came back, with more protesters. Soon, they inspired sit-in movements throughout the South. At the same time, a group of activists decided to challenge segregation on interstate buses by going on a Freedom Ride, a bus ride throughout the South to a number of segregated areas. Through they were frequently greeted by violent assault and their buses were burned and destroyed, they carried on. Their persistence and commitment to nonviolence grabbed headlines, as well as the attention of President John F. Kennedy and his attorney general brother Robert. Their courage helped strike of powerful blow against racism throughout America. Book jacket.

The Murder of Emmett Till

release date: Jan 01, 2008
The Murder of Emmett Till
Emmett Till was a bright and confident African American boy growing up with his single mother in Chicago. An offer to spend a few weeks with his great-uncle and cousins in Mississippi seemed like a fun way to spend his summer. His mother warned him about the racism and the violence aimed toward blacks down South, but Emmett paid little heed to her words. Then, just a few days after arriving in Mississippi, Emmett made a decision that changed everything. Violating Mississippi's deeply ingrained racial codes, Emmett innocently flirted with a white woman-the wife of local store owner Roy Bryant. When Bryant found out, he recruited his brother-in-law, J. W. Milam-who had boasted of pistol-whipping Germans during World War II-and the two proceeded to kidnap Emmett Till. Three days later, fourteen-year-old Emmett Till's body was found in a river, badly mutilated with a bullet wound in the skull. The ensuing trial of Bryant and Milam, and the fallout from its controversial verdict, galvanized the nation, sending a clear and horrifying message about racial oppression and justice in the American South during the Jim Crow era. It also was one of the first major incidents of the civil rights movement, and it was ingrained in the minds of the era's crusaders, an undeniable reminder of what they fought for and what was at stake. Book jacket.

The Trial of the Scottsboro Boys

release date: Jan 01, 2007
The Trial of the Scottsboro Boys
In 1931, while America was in the grips of the Great Depression, nine young black men fought with a group of white men while hoboing on a train near Scottsboro, Alabama. When police arrived to-arrest them at the train's next stop, the nine knew they were in trouble - but they had no idea just how much. Unbeknownst to them, two women who were also aboard the train told the police that the nine black men had assaulted and raped them. Evidence suggested that there was little truth to this accusation, but local police and citizenry, enraged at the idea of black men violating white women, immediately rounded up and arrested the nine black men, dubbing them the Scottsboro Boys. The Boys were quickly found guilty and sentenced to die in subsequent trials, but the lack of convincing evidence, and the blatant injustice of the rushed trials, outraged people nationwide. Soon the Scottsboro Boys were being fought for by the NAACP, socialists, and even President Franklin Roosevelt. They were all up against a powerful enemy - the deeply corrupt and racist justice system of Jim Crow-era Alabama. The trials and struggles for justice would carry on for years and change the face of justice and civil rights in America. Book jacket.
