POWER of the DOG (2nd Edition, Fully Revised and Expanded)

release date: Dec 05, 2014
POWER of the DOG (2nd Edition, Fully Revised and Expanded)
This 2nd Edition of "Power of the Dog" is an updated version of the acclaimed original work published in 2009. Now in 2014, five years of new findings are in this newly released edition, which is unique among dog books. The new research is both woven into the real-life stories about dogs and their superhuman powers, as well as found in new chapters added to this newly released treatise about how dog beats man at 37 feats. (See the "Table of Contents" where they are enumerated and grouped into nine categories). Anyone who has witnessed even their pet dog under duress-or rescue dogs at work-will attest that dog behavior can far exceed expectations when something is wrong, especially when its master is involved or a dog rescue is initiated by the military or police. Dogs-whether in the military or our pets, can-with proper dog training-become "masters" themselves; that is, experts at a variety of feats, from finding their way home, discovering a missing soldier in war, to detecting human maladies or impending natural disasters. Virtually all dog breeds have at least some ability to do an amazing array of things better than us, not just police and military dogs, but our household canine pets too. Research has proven dogs can do some things better than humans, even when we are aided by the latest technology or a team of experts. This book is about the myriad things that man just cannot beat dogs at, from telepathic and physical feats to the metaphysical and emotional. Today, with decades of research, these canine powers are not nearly as mysterious as they once were. Scientists of all stripes-animal behaviorists, veterinary researchers, zoologists, medical doctors, and trained psychologists-have been unlocking some of the mysteries of how dogs do the amazing things they do. This is the subject of Power of the Dog, which cites their research throughout in an entertaining and informative text that''s chockfull of true stories. Its focus is on things at which dog beats man, from saving lives in peril, to predicting the future, to improving the life, health, and wellbeing of the canine''s "next of kin," us, the species of man. Thousands of years ago, we took wolves out of the wild, fed them, pampered them, cared for them, and above all loved them and got their love in return. That wasn''t a bad deal for either of us, was it? This book is about both sides of the deal, and it will help you understand dogs and maybe even shed some light on why they understand us, too.

Jefferson Davis

release date: Jan 01, 2013
Jefferson Davis
In February 1861, Jefferson Davis told his wife that he had been elected president of the Confederacy. He expressed this news, his wife recalled, "as a man might speak of a sentence of death." Davis feared what might lie ahead: a horrific civil war. Davis was a controversial, enigmatic figure. Despite his desire for peace, he brazenly ordered the attack on Fort Sumter, which triggered the war. Yet, while Southerners were dying and starving, he urged them to make even greater sacrifices-to fight to the finish. All the while, he suffered personal tragedies: the deaths of his first wife and his four sons. Heroic and tragic, despised and beloved, Davis remains one of the most compelling figures in American history.

Martin Luther King Jr. and the 1963 March on Washington

release date: Jan 01, 2013
Martin Luther King Jr. and the 1963 March on Washington
In a 1963 Gallup poll, Americans listed civil rights as the most important crisis facing the nation. That May in segregated Birmingham, Alabama, firefighters blasted black marchers with powerful fire hoses. Millions of Americans were becoming outraged at such events, and so too was President John F. Kennedy. That June the Kennedy Administration worked on a civil rights bill, and Kennedy himself would urge congress to pass it. However, Martin Luther King Jr. knew that southern politicians would do all they could to block such legislation. King told his advisers that "something dramatic must be done" to support the civil rights bill because "I don''t think it will pass otherwise." That "something" would be the March on Washington. Black labor leader A. Philip Randolph, seventy-four, had dreamed of such a march for decades. On August 28, it came to fruition, with 250,000 civil rights supporters descending on the nation''s capital. King, the last of the many speakers that day, delivered his legendary "I Have a Dream" speech. This book recounts King''s ascent to the proverbial "mountaintop" as well as the details of that historic even in Washington. Who made it happen? How did the marchers get through the muggy afternoon? What was their reaction to King''s speech? All of these issues, and more, are explored in Martin Luther King Jr. and the 1963 March on Washington.

A Time for Martyrs

release date: Jan 01, 2013
A Time for Martyrs
How should black Americans battle racial injustice? "By any means necessary," Malcolm X declared. In the early 1960s, Malcolm X was arguably the most controversial man in America. While other civil rights leaders were careful not to alienate the white establishment, Malcolm spoke without restraint. For centuries, he exclaimed, "the white man has had his foot-long knife in the black man''s back." For Malcolm, the modest gains of the civil rights movement were not enough. "An integrated cup of coffee," he said, "isn''t sufficient pay for four hundred years of slave labor." Tall and charismatic, Malcolm inspired millions of black Americans with his powerful speeches and, after his death in 1965, his highly acclaimed autobiography. Even a young Barack Obama was enamored by the "blunt poetry of his word, his unadorned insistence on respect." As a child, Malcolm endured racial horrors that destroyed his family. He fell into a life of crime and drugs, was transformed by the Nation of Islam, and later came to the realization--before he was murdered--that good lay in the world''s people regardless of their race. This book recounts details of the details of a remarkable man''s extraordinary life.

In 1954, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in the Brown v. Board of Education case that segregation in public schools was unconstitutional, but in Montgomery, Alabama, segregation remained the way of life, especially on the buses. Not only were black citizens forced to sit in the back of the bus, they were frequently the victims of abuse and humiliation. When Rosa Parks, a modest black woman, was arrested for refusing to give up her seat, civil rights activists decided to use her case as a rallying point, and quickly urged all black citizens of Montgomery to boycott the buses. More than 90 percent complied. Soon, a charismatic, young preacher named Martin Luther King Jr. was selected to lead the strike, and the Civil Rights movement began. But the white authorities in Montgomery held desperately to power, battling the strikers in the courts and on the streets. Inspired by King and determined to demand equality, the black people of Montgomery refused to back down, or be intimidated by anything thrown at them, whether it was fines, beatings, arrests, or bombs. The Murder of Emmett Till

release date: Jan 01, 2008
The Murder of Emmett Till
Emmett Till was a bright and confident African American boy growing up with his single mother in Chicago. An offer to spend a few weeks with his great-uncle and cousins in Mississippi seemed like a fun way to spend his summer. His mother warned him about the racism and the violence aimed toward blacks down South, but Emmett paid little heed to her words. Then, just a few days after arriving in Mississippi, Emmett made a decision that changed everything. Violating Mississippi''s deeply ingrained racial codes, Emmett innocently flirted with a white woman-the wife of local store owner Roy Bryant. When Bryant found out, he recruited his brother-in-law, J. W. Milam-who had boasted of pistol-whipping Germans during World War II-and the two proceeded to kidnap Emmett Till. Three days later, fourteen-year-old Emmett Till''s body was found in a river, badly mutilated with a bullet wound in the skull. The ensuing trial of Bryant and Milam, and the fallout from its controversial verdict, galvanized the nation, sending a clear and horrifying message about racial oppression and justice in the American South during the Jim Crow era. It also was one of the first major incidents of the civil rights movement, and it was ingrained in the minds of the era''s crusaders, an undeniable reminder of what they fought for and what was at stake. Book jacket.
