The Awesome Game

release date: Oct 24, 2023
The Awesome Game
One man''s search to answer the ultimate question in sports: Why is hockey so incredibly awesome? Dave Hill—author, actor, rock musician and stand-up comedian—is a truly outstanding American. For one thing, he''s part Canadian (an advantage he explored in his previous book Parking the Moose). For another, and maybe this has something to do with his Canadian heritage, he''s a totally obsessive fan of hockey. That makes him a minority within a minority: apparently only five percent of the US population admit to liking hockey more than any other sport. In his latest opus, Dave—who''s from Cleveland, which hasn''t had an NHL team since 1978—tackles this hockey conundrum with full force, drilling down into what makes hockey so damn important in so many parts of the world, despite the average American not recognizing the sport''s preeminent greatness. His search for the very soul of hockey has taken him across the globe, from Poland to LA to Kenya, and brought him into contact with many of the sport''s great and good. Humorous but heartfelt, Bill Bryson-like but hipper, this is arguably the greatest book ever written about hockey and definitely the one to be asking for at Christmas.

Practical Ideas for Multi-cultural Learning and Teaching in the Primary Classroom

release date: Jul 20, 2017
Practical Ideas for Multi-cultural Learning and Teaching in the Primary Classroom
Originally published in 1989. The practical application of multicultural education to the British elementary school classroom is discussed. The first part explores the historical development of multicultural education, considering sex and class inequality and local and national educational practices; and makes suggestions for improvement. Part two suggests practical ideas for explicit and hidden curricula. Seven themes for ethnically diverse topics are suggested and for each area, teacher aims and pupil objectives are defined and potential resources are listed. Five areas of aspects of social and personal development in a multicultural context are then explored. Includes a foreword by Lord Swann.

The Arctic, the Inuit, and the Polar Bear

release date: Mar 22, 2016
The Arctic, the Inuit, and the Polar Bear
The Arctic,The Inuit and the Polar Bear,is a account of the most unexpected and incredible experience that I had ever had, living with three Inuits well within the Arctic circle.I became part of their extended family and for three weeks I worked, slept and ate with them, eating Inuit food, which is high in protein and fat and low in carbohydrates.I had to adapt to their diet, culture and to twenty four hours of daylight.this was very hard to do as there is no dawn or dusk to indicate the start and finish of each day. None of this was planned,it seemed like fate that I was destined to go,and celebrate my sixtieth birthday in a remote part of the world and if I had learned about it earlier in Life I would have jumped in with both feet at such an opportunity. I learned first hand of how they cope with a complete change in their lifestyle from being a nomadic race to learning to live in the twenty first century by white man''s rules. In days gone by they were completely self sufficient but now they have to buy products from the ''south'' such as clothes, snowmobiles and white man''s food which has not done them any favours and has introduced obesity among other illnesses. They now have to earn money to pay their way in our world, and in their environment it is very difficult to do. The hunt was very difficult and all of us were working over eighteen hours each day and only sleeping when we were exhausted. At first it was difficult to realise that the temperatures were down to minus forty as the sky was blue and the sunshine made it appear warm but if you removed your gloves you could get frostbite within minutes. After a two day journey on snowmobiles pulling our sledges from Arctic Bay to the hunting grounds,we made base camp and from then on we reverted to using the dog sleighs, this was truly unbelievable and was exciting to say the least,it was remarkable how these dogs performed, they did all that their master asked of them and even more. How the could work as hard as they did on the minimum of food astounded me,any other dog would have died. For the first time in my life I was living with true hunters, these guy do it not for sport but for pure necessity, they needed food to survive. They were true masters of their art.At the start of our hunting day we released the dogs from their chains and harnessed them to their sledge in readiness to start our daily routine, which often lasted eighteen hours before we returned to camp and tied the dogs to their chains, where they stayed until the next day. To be free in such a pristine and frozen wilderness and be as one with nature is something that I would love to repeat,it was a remarkable twenty one days,we started from Arctic Bay as three Induits with their client, after two days I was part of the team and returned as close friends,I was now part of their family and will remain so for ever,I can''t wait to go back in the summer and learn about how they survive and prepare for the winter to come.

Single Men
Single Men. Who needs them? Dave Hill follows the lives of four vastly different personalities in Single Men, a witty and insightful novel perfect for fans of David Nicholls'' Us or Graeme Simsion''s The Rosie Project. This is the story of 24 year-old Marie who does domestic chores for three single men: 20-something Marlon, a currency trader, who is finding his love life and work life a strain, and is indulging in potentially self-destructive means to compensate; 30-something Daniel, an antiques and erotic art dealer, between boyfriends at the moment but the father of an 8 year-old daughter who lives with him; and 40-something Guy, a heart surgeon and divorced father of a teenage son, dynamic, charismatic, macho but ultimately juvenile, with a complex private life. The story revolves around the dynamics of Marie''s relationships with these very different men and asks the crucial questions - do men need women? Do women need men? What are the mysterious dynamics that draw and repel the sexes? The answers in Single Men are very surprising and entertaining indeed... What readers are saying about Dave Hill''s novels: ''Enjoyable, witty and well observed'' ''The quality and depth of the characters see this book through with flying colours'' ''Narrative drive, gritty realism and sheer laugh-out-loud wit''
