In-between Epistemic Paradigms of Disablement: a Reflective Journey

release date: Jan 01, 2019
In-between Epistemic Paradigms of Disablement: a Reflective Journey
Author''s abstract: The author explores feelings of in-betweenness, hybridity, and dislocation (Aoki, 2005; Bhabha, 2007/1994; Saïd, 1994) as he contemplates the meaningfulness of a liminal placement between two epistemic worlds—that of his more recent experiences as a curriculum studies scholar and his previous training as a postpositivist practitioner of school psychology. This self-study engages pedagogical possibilities of in-between spaces (Aoki, 2005; He & Ross, 2012; Baszile, 2006) to construct a lived curriculum that challenges traditional stereotypes of autism and postsecondary disability services. To guide this critical self-reflective inquiry, the author applies the concepts of Joseph Schwab’s (1973) curriculum commonplaces along with William Pinar’s (1975) method of currere as organizational structures and metaphorical guideposts to look back upon previous educational experiences, to consider the present, and to envision a future praxis. In looking beyond the traditional-medico conceptions of disablement, the author seeks alternate understandings of the autism label that arise not from the epistemic landscape of prior training but rather are informed by postcolonial scholarship, critical disability studies, cultural studies, and the personal narratives of individuals with autism. Major findings of this project relate to the following themes: the pervasiveness of positivism; the challenge of writing about lived experiences of in-between; differences between abstract theories and lived experiences of in-betweenness; and the agency of those labeled with disability. By blending alternate understandings of autism and reimagining ways to recognize the personal agency and functional needs of college students with autism, the author reconceptualizes feelings of in-betweenness and dislocation as a potential position for hope, opportunity, and change.

And now he''s official, an agent of the paranormal intelligence department Hourglass, and posted to New York''s Madhouse facility with the ghost of his best friend and their seasoned team. And they have their work cut out for them. Local Hourglass assets are being targeted by a lethal, horrifically-enhanced killer called The Hangman, the first weapon in a new campaign of terror being waged against Hourglass. But he won''t be the last. The First H II Regions in the Universe
I next describe 1D radiation-hydrodynamical calculations of UV escape from minihalo density profiles taken from adaptive mesh refinement calculations of first star formation. These simulations demonstrate that in excess of 90% of the ionizing photons will exit the halo if the central star is greater than 80 solar masses, and that the final H II regions range from 2000 pc to 5000 pc in radius for 80 M⊙

A Performance Analysis of Multiprocessors Using Two-level Caches

A Performance Analysis of Multiprocessors Using Two-level Caches
This thesis proposes a two-level cache organization for multiprocessors. The first level of cache consists of a private cache per processor. The second level of caches is shared by all processors. The main memory is also similarly shared. A cache coherence solution is proposed for such an organization. The performance of the proposed multi-processor is evaluated with analytical methods. The factors that affect the performance are quantitatively discussed. A variation of the proposed coherence algorithm is presented to improve the performance. Keywords: High reliability; Cache memories; Mathematical analysis. (Author).

Transformations of Carotenoids in the Oceanic Water Column

Transformations of Carotenoids in the Oceanic Water Column
In an effort to understand the more general mechanisms and rates of pre-depositional reactions that transform organic matter, the types and relevant time scales of reactions that transform carotenoid pigments in the oceanic water column were studied. Suspended particulate matter collected from surface waters of Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts and the Peru upwelling system has a carotenoid distribution reflecting the phytoplanktonic source of the material. The carotenoid distribution of sediment trap samples collected in these same areas was dominated by transformation products. Fucoxanthin, the primary carotenoid of marine diatoms, typically constituted 77-100% of the total fucopigments in suspended particulate material. In sediment trap samples this pigment constituted only 4-85% of the total. The remaining 15-96% of the pigments consisted of the fucoxanthin transformations products: free alcohols (2-94%), dehydrates (0-6%), and opened epoxides (0-19%). Preliminary results suggest that carotenoid esters are hydrolyzed to free alcohols at a rate determined by the turnover of primary productivity.

Secondary Reinforcement for Fiber Reinforced Polymers Reinforced Concrete Panels
"The objective of the project was to investigate the development of an empirical secondary reinforcement ratio for FRP based on experimental tests performed at the University of Missouri-Rolla (UMR). This study was separated into three phases which examined both early-age and later-age effects of various reinforcement ratios on the formation of shrinkage/temperature and flexural cracks."--Abstract, p. iii.

The Role of PI3K in Ephrin-A1 Induced Cell Retraction

release date: Jan 01, 2008
The Role of PI3K in Ephrin-A1 Induced Cell Retraction
The Eph family of receptor tyrosine kinases and their cognate ligands, the Ephrins, form a coordinated program of cell contact-mediated migration control, polarity establishment, and tissue architecture development. Specifically, the ligand Ephrin-A1 has been shown to regulate cell morphology and motility through the activation of EphA receptors, which signal to the small GTPase RhoA, leading to actin cytoskeleton remodeling and cell retraction away from regions of high Ephrin-A1 concentration. The aim of this study is to investigate the molecular signaling events, which regulate Ephrin-A1-induced morphological remodeling and cell retraction. My results indicate that Ephrin-A1-induced cell retraction is mediated by PI3K-p85[Beta]-dependent signaling to RhoA, MLC2, and the actin cytoskeleton. Treatment of wildtype MEFs or NIH3T3 fibroblasts with Ephrin-A1 is sufficient to induce the rapid activation of RhoA, the phosphorylation of MLC2, and actin reorganization, leading to marked cell retraction. In contrast, p85[Beta]-/- MEFs exhibited markedly impaired RhoA activation, decreased MLC2 phosphorylation, and lack of actin reorganization or cell retraction following Ephrin-A1 stimulation. Signaling to RhoA, MLC2, and the induction of cell retraction could be rescued in p85[Beta]-/- MEFs, following the re-expression of the p85[Beta] gene. Furthermore, we have shown that Ephrin-A1, when used as a surface coating, prevents cell adhesion/spreading or migration onto the coated surface. Moreover, Ephrin-A1 treatment results in the dephosphorylation of paxillin and induces the reorganization of phospho-paxillin-containing focal adhesions. The present study contributes significantly to the understanding of the molecular signaling pathways that regulate Ephrin-A1-mediated cell retraction and adhesion to the substrate.
