International law is rich in promise but poor in detail and practical application about the rights of indigenous people. This book focuses on practical measures that have been implemented in states to give effect to free, prior and informed consent (FPIC); self-determination by indigenous people; special electoral measures to benefit indigenous people; and the role of advisory bodies to advocate for indigenous interests. In many comparative works there are often only scant or brief reference to some country-experiences, but in this book several case studies are explored in depth to promote a greater understanding of the self-determination arrangements that have been implemented. These case studies represent a form of glocalisation, whereby global principles are applied to find local solutions, and local solutions in turn inform greater clarity and specificity to global principles. At the end of each chapter key lessons that can be drawn from the respective case studies are identified in the hope that those may inform developments in other countries and in international law.

Humility and humiliation have an awkward, often unacknowledged intimacy. Humility may be a queenly, cardinal or monkish virtue, while humiliation points to an affective state at the extreme end of shame. Yet a shared etymology links the words to lowliness and, further down, to the earth. As this study suggests, like the terms in question, T. S. Eliot and Samuel Beckett share an imperfect likeness. Between them is a common interest in states of abjection, shame and suffering – and possible responses to such states. Tracing the relation between negative affect, ethics, and aesthetics, Eliot and Beckett’s Low Modernism demonstrates how these two major modernists recuperate the affinity between humility and humiliation – concepts whose definitions have largely been determined by philosophy and theology.

Malko aperçut sa Honda blanche garée le long du Holiday Inn. Il allait prendre sa clef lorsque son regard glissa jusqu''au véhicule garé devant sa voiture. Son sang se figea en une fraction de seconde. C''était la Cherokee blanche, celle qui contenait les 500 kilos de TNT. Il n''osait même plus bouger, comme si le moindre déplacement d''air allait déclencher l''explosion. Puis, son cerveau se remit en route. Tout près, peut-être sur le trottoir d''en face, quelqu''un attendait qu''il soit arrivé pour appuyer sur le bouton.

Un cargo chargé d''armes est attaqué par des pirates somaliens. Le commandant réussit à photographier l''un d''eux. La photo parvient à la CIA qui découvre ainsi que les pirates somaliens se sont alliés aux « Shebabs », les taliban somaliens et qu''ils préparent des actions terroristes. Malko, qui a déjà travaillé sur la Somalie file au Kenya, base arrière des pirates. Après avoir été kidnappé par leurs complices, il découvre que la seule « source » capable de les renseigner se trouve à Mogadiscio, l''endroit le plus dangereux du monde. Il s''y rend en compagnie d''une « stringer » somalienne de la CIA, Hawo et parvient à contacter la « source », qui sert désormais d''interprète aux pirates. Ce dernier promet de le rejoindre à Mombasa, dès qu''il aura l''information.Ce qu''il fait, mais les shebabs l''ont surveillé et il est abattu avant d''avoir pu parler à Malko. Cependant, son dernier geste, avant de mourir, permet à Malko de déduire le nom du bateau qui doit être attaqué : un énorme « gazier », qui transporte 80.000m3 de gaz liquéfié. Une bombe.

The turn of the twenty-first century has witnessed an eruption of nonfiction films on sex work. The first book to examine a cross-section of this diverse and transnational body of work, Sexography confronts the ethical questions raised by ethnographic documentary and interviews with sexually marginalized subjects. Nicholas de Villiers argues that carnal and cultural knowledge are inextricably entangled in ethnographic sex work documentaries. De Villiers offers a reading of cinema as a technology of truth and advances a theory of confessional and counterconfessional performance by the interviewed subject who must negotiate both loaded questions and stigma. He pays special attention to the tactical negotiation of power in these films and how cultural and geopolitical shifts have affected sex work and sex workers. Throughout, Sexography analyzes the films of a range of non–sex-worker filmmakers, including Jennie Livingston, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Shohini Ghosh, and Cui Zi’en, as well as films produced by sex workers. In addition, it identifies important parallels and intersections between queer and sex worker rights activist movements and their documentary historiography. De Villiers ultimately demonstrates how commercial sex is intertwined with culture and power. He advocates shifting our approach from scrutinizing the motives of those who sell sex to examining the motives and roles of the filmmakers and transnational audiences creating and consuming films about sex work.
