The Novels of Ivan Turgenev
This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1917 edition. Excerpt: ... (6) Columns for Discount on Purchases and Discount on Notes on the same side of the Cash Book; (c) Columns for Discount on Sales and Cash Sales on the debit side of the Cash Book; (d) Departmental columns in the Sales Book and in the Purchase Book. Controlling Accounts.--The addition of special columns in books of original entry makes possible the keeping of Controlling Accounts. The most common examples of such accounts are Accounts Receivable account and Accounts Payable account. These summary accounts, respectively, displace individual customers'' and creditors'' accounts in the Ledger. The customers'' accounts are then segregated in another book called the Sales Ledger or Customers'' Ledger, while the creditors'' accounts are kept in the Purchase or Creditors'' Ledger. The original Ledger, now much reduced in size, is called the General Ledger. The Trial Balance now refers to the accounts in the General Ledger. It is evident that the task of taking a Trial Balance is greatly simplified because so many fewer accounts are involved. A Schedule of Accounts Receivable is then prepared, consisting of the balances found in the Sales Ledger, and its total must agree with the balance of the Accounts Receivable account shown in the Trial Balance. A similar Schedule of Accounts Payable, made up of all the balances in the Purchase Ledger, is prepared, and it must agree with the balance of the Accounts Payable account of the General Ledger." The Balance Sheet.--In the more elementary part of the text, the student learned how to prepare a Statement of Assets and Liabilities for the purpose of disclosing the net capital of an enterprise. In the present chapter he was shown how to prepare a similar statement, the Balance Sheet. For all practical...

The Idiot

The Idiot
Towards the end of November, during a thaw, at nine o''clock one morning, a train on the Warsaw and Petersburg railway was approaching the latter city at full speed. The morning was so damp and misty that it was only with great difficulty that the day succeeded in breaking; and it was impossible to distinguish anything more than a few yards away from the carriage windows. Some of the passengers by this particular train were returning from abroad; but the third-class carriages were the best filled, chiefly with insignificant persons of various occupations and degrees, picked up at the different stations nearer town. All of them seemed weary, and most of them had sleepy eyes and a shivering expression, while their complexions generally appeared to have taken on the colour of the fog outside. When day dawned, two passengers in one of the third-class carriages found themselves opposite each other. Both were young fellows, both were rather poorly dressed, both had remarkable faces, and both were evidently anxious to start a conversation. If they had but known why, at this particular moment, they were both remarkable persons, they would undoubtedly have wondered at the strange chance which had set them down opposite to one another in a third-class carriage of the Warsaw Railway Company. One of them was a young fellow of about twenty-seven, not tall, with black curling hair, and small, grey, fiery eyes. His nose was broad and flat, and he had high cheek bones; his thin lips were constantly compressed into an impudent, ironical-it might almost be called a malicious-smile; but his forehead was high and well formed, and atoned for a good deal of the ugliness of the lower part of his face. A special feature of this physiognomy was its death-like pallor, which gave to the whole man an indescribably emaciated appearance in spite of his hard look, and at the same time a sort of passionate and suffering expression which did not harmonize with his impudent, sarcastic smile and keen, self-satisfied bearing. He wore a large fur-or rather astrachan-overcoat, which had kept him warm all night, while his neighbour had been obliged to bear the full severity of a Russian November night entirely unprepared. His wide sleeveless mantle with a large cape to it-the sort of cloak one sees upon travellers during the winter months in Switzerland or North Italy-was by no means adapted to the long cold journey through Russia, from Eydkuhnen to St. Petersburg.

Notes from Underground

release date: Dec 05, 2019
Notes from Underground
Notes from Underground is a fictional collection of memoirs written by a civil servant living alone in St. Petersburg. The man is never named and is generally referred to as the Underground Man. The "underground" in the book refers to the narrator''s isolation, which he described in chapter 11 as "listening through a crack under the floor." It is considered to be one of the first existentialist novels. With this book, Dostoevsky challenged the ideologies of his time, like nihilism and utopianism. The Underground Man shows how idealized rationality in utopias is inherently flawed, because it doesn''t account for the irrational side of humanity. This novel has had a big impact on many different works of literature and philosophy. It has influenced writers like Franz Kafka and Friedrich Nietzsche. A similar character is also found in Martin Scorsese''s Taxi Driver. Notes from Underground was published in 1864 as the first four issues of Epoch, a Russian magazine by Fyodor and Mikhail Dostoevsky. Presented here is Constance Garnett''s translation from 1918.

An Unpleasant Predicament
In "An Unpleasant Predicament: A Nasty Story," Fyodor Dostoyevsky delves into the moral dilemmas and psychological complexities of human existence. Through an incisive narrative style rich with dark humor and profound irony, Dostoyevsky explores the theme of isolation and the inescapable entanglement of personal desires with societal conventions. This short story critically examines the absurdities of life, revealing how the characters'' self-deceptions ultimately lead to their moral quandaries, reflecting the broader existential struggles of 19th-century Russia. Fyodor Dostoyevsky, a towering figure in world literature, was profoundly influenced by his own tumultuous experiences, including imprisonment and political exile. These hardships ignited his explorations into morality, human psychology, and the complexities of consciousness, which resonate throughout his body of work. His unique ability to articulate the inner turmoil of his characters positions him as a pivotal figure in the transition to literary modernism. This compelling narrative is highly recommended for both fans of literary fiction and those seeking to understand the existential undercurrents that define the human condition. Dostoyevsky''s exploration of the darker shades of humanity encourages readers to confront their own ethical dilemmas in a thought-provoking engagement with life''s inherent contradictions.
