Child-Eater

release date: Jul 18, 2013
Child-Eater
The folktale of Hansel And Gretel has its origins in stories from various European countries, relating to periods of extreme famine when families were often driven to murder, and even cannibalize, their own offspring in order to survive. As well as featuring such horror staples as an evil witch, a dark forest, and the cooking and devouring of human flesh, it also stands as the blueprint for tales of children in jeopardy. This special ebook collection of texts relating to the Hansel And Gretel legend starts with the definitive Grimms version from 1812, followed by an earlier Italian variant, Giambattista Basile’s Nennillo And Nennella (1674). It also features two classic tales from France: Le Petit Poucet (“Hop O’My Thumb”) by Charles Perrault (1697), and Finette Cendron (“Cunning Cinders”) by Madame d''Aulnoy (1721); both of these works feature elements (abandoned children, incinerating cannibal monsters) which would later crystallize in the Grimms classic. As a bonus, this collection also includes two parallel tales of Baba Yaga, the cannibal witch of Russian legend: Baba Yaga, and Baba Yaga And Vasilissa The Beautiful, both dating from the 19th century. With a cover illustration by Arthur Rackham.

Fairy Tales of Charles Perrault - Illustrated by Harry Clarke

release date: Apr 16, 2013
Fairy Tales of Charles Perrault - Illustrated by Harry Clarke
Originally published in 1922, The Fairy Tales of Charles Perrault is a wonderful collection of some true classics of children’s literature. Perrault (1628 – 1703) was among the first writers to bring magical children’s stories into the literary mainstream, proving to his original seventeenth century readers that such works were important, enjoyable, as well as thought-provoking. They remain as popular today, as they were then. This edition contains ten of Perrault''s most famous works, including ‘Cinderilla’, ‘Little Red Riding Hood’, ‘Sleeping Beauty in The Wood’, and ‘The Master Cat - or Puss in Boots’, ''Blue Beard'', ''Donkeyskin'' and others. The Fairy Tales of Charles Perrault are accompanied by the dazzling illustrations of a master of the trade; Harry Clarke (1889 – 1931). Clarke was an Irish stained-glass artist and book illustrator – and a leading figure in the Irish Arts and Crafts Movement. His drawings were inspired by the Art Nouveax style so typical of this period – and his sinuous lines combined with delicate colouring earned him a reputation as a preeminent illustrator of the ‘Golden Age.’ Presented alongside the text, Clarke’s enchanting creations serve to further refine and enhance Perrault’s magical storytelling – making this a book to be enjoyed and appreciated, by both young and old alike.

The Master Cat, Or Puss in Boots

release date: Dec 12, 2011
The Master Cat, Or Puss in Boots
Puss in Boots is one of the most famous of Charles Perrault''s tales. It was first published in 1697 in a collection of eight fairy tales called Histoires ou contes du temps passé (Stories or Tales of Past Times). Since that time, Puss in Boots has become a very popular character and has appeared in films, cartoons and comics. Despite its popularity, the tale has been criticised by some people. For example, George Cruikshank, the British caricaturist and book illustrator, wrote, "When I came to look carefully at that story, I felt compelled to rewrite it, and alter the character of it to a certain extent, for, as it stood, the tale was a succession of successful falsehoods - a clever lesson in lying, a system of imposture rewarded by the greatest worldly advantages! - a useful lesson, truly, to be impressed upon the minds of children." This edition includes remarkable illustrations by Walter Crane. Crane''s work on children''s books in cooperation with the publisher Edmund Evans earned him worldwide fame in the late 19th century. (For more fairy tales of Charles Perrault with illustrations by Walter Crane see ISBN 978-1468141184).
