How to Restore a Castle

release date: Dec 06, 2023
How to Restore a Castle
Welcome to the second part of Charles Dixon-Spain''s attempt to capture all the wonder, danger, hilarity and stress that restoring a castle on the West Coast of Scotland brings. Sadie and Charles moved from London to Dunans Castle in March 2003, and spent the next couple of years creating a life in the Highlands against mounting odds. Through a series of admonitions, set out as a how-to manual, a tale of courage in the face of disappointment, misdirection and intimidation begins to emerge, in which the couple work to uncover the recent history of a building ill-served by its previous owners. The husband and wife team will stand firm in the face of midges, wrecked gateways and character assassination, while drawing comfort from family, friends and the people they meet in the local community as they work to restore the building and bring it back to life. If you have ever been gifted, or bought a decorative title from ScottishLaird, this is the tale you have been waiting for. An intimate depiction of the building and people you have already encountered and helped through the contribution made by your title.

Den & Pel

release date: Jan 01, 2018
Den & Pel
"A two-volume book about the lives of two people who were successful because of their determination. Dennis and Pelma Dixon were born in the early 1900''s. Despite the many hardships they faced, they were able to earn college degrees, raise their children (while both taught school), be involved in community service and every important event in which their children and grandchildren were involved. These were the values they stressed to their family. Many of the stories in the two volumes are taken from Mrs. Pelma Blair Dixon''s diary and journals she kept most of her life, including personal letters written by Den to Pel, and Pel to Den during their courtship. Also interwoven in the chapters are many historical accounts of life in rural eastern Kentucky. The descriptions detailed in this book are difficult for anyone in the 21st century to understand. Both of them lived their entire lives in Letcher County, Kentucky. Their early lives were lived on Elk Creek and Johnson Fork, before moving to Jenkins. Volume 1 looks at this couple''s love for Carcassonne High School, which gave them a start for an education. The many hardships they endured while persevering is a theme throughout the book. Volume 2 takes a closer look at the lives of Dennis and Pelma Dixon after their move to Jenkins, where they would live out remarkable lives."--
