Charlie "Chiz" Davis is a committed brother of The Priests MC, but even within the world of the outlaw motorcycle club, he's considered to be a little extreme. His little quirks weren't an issue in his role as Enforcer; in fact they were downright useful, although, occasionally they caused a problem or two. But now Chiz has been promoted to Sergeant at Arms, and he really should be on his best behaviour. When he gets carried away one night and goes too far, he decides to take a break and leave town while the dust settles.Andrea Broussard is a businesswoman first and foremost, although her business is somewhat unconventional. Her world is of her own making, she has no family or lover to share it with, because that is exactly the way she wants it. With no commitments during the holiday season she goes out for a quiet drink.A chance encounter brings two strangers together. Completely removed from their individual spheres, they find there's a spark that they can't ignore. When they return to their respective realities, they find that they've changed each other irrevocably. The bond that they've forged will be tested, but ultimately it will bring them strength, if they let it.

This Way to the Curious Land of the Secret Heart

release date: Jan 01, 2006
This Way to the Curious Land of the Secret Heart
Abstract: This Way to the Curious Land of the Secret Heart, a project comprised of a novel- in-progress, a short story, and paintings, is an exploration of an aesthetic that combines the realistic and the fantastic. From the fantastic I draw inspiration regarding expectations of what can and cannot happen in the "real" world: talking animals, portals into other dimensions, half-human and half-animal creatures, magic mirrors, and shape-shifting women and men exist in the world of these narratives. Alongside imaginative elements of dreamscape and fantasy, realist conventions also hold their own. While I consider myself to be a fantastical writer, I also see myself as operating very much within the realist tradition, and to that end, the stories here focus on multi-faceted, ordinary people and place the narrative emphasis on a close examination of character. Henry James insists that the "stout stake of emotion"--what the focal character cares about and thus the audience cares about--is the most necessary element of story against which the action takes place. It is my hope that the use of the supernatural in This Way to the Curious Land of the Secret Heart serves to make the "stout stake of emotion" more clear rather than less, and that ultimately character functions as the organizing principle to define how the supernatural will manifest itself and operate within the context of each story's world. This project also explores the ways in which adults, even as they grow out of childhood, do not completely leave their childhood selves behind. I use narrative techniques that are most often aimed at children--illustration to accompany text and the inclusion of the fantastical--to tell stories that get at adult concerns. Some of those adult concerns in This Way to the Curious Land of the Secret Heart include the search for true love, infidelity in committed relationships, mental illness, the question of what constitutes reality, and the alienation of the individual self in a contemporary, urban landscape. Eleven illustrations (mixed media paintings on canvas) are included dispersed throughout the novel-in-progress. The term "illustration" is somewhat misleading in that the included paintings are not intended to pictorially represent moments in the story. The paintings were completed with the story's events in mind, but rather than attempting to "represent" events of plot, my hope is that the paintings act as a parallel means of exploring the themes of the novel. One of the major themes of the novel centers on the question of whether a magical "other world" exists beyond (and within) the realms of what is conventionally agreed upon as external "reality." The paintings, much like the magical "other world" in This Way to the Curious Land of the Secret Heart, are themselves a simultaneous and parallel world that I hope interacts and communicates with the written text to expand both meaning and mystery in a way in which neither word nor image could on its own. To provide a brief example, the painting "The Ganympedie and the Gnossanu" does not show two creatures that look like those creatures described in the text. The painting shows one dominant fire-eyed creature reaching out menacingly(or perhaps lovingly--the play is intentional) toward a more meek and fearful creature. I hope the dynamic of dominance and fear (or perhaps it is merely the dynamic of one individual reaching toward another) evoked by the picture interacts with the way the creatures' relationship is described in the story. My intention is to expand upon one of the major themes of the project as a whole--the difficulties of two individuals finding authentic love. The painting "Charlotte and Chitty-Witty" shows two cats--one fully visible and one that seems to melt into the backdrop of night. This painting, which does not represent the human character of Charlotte as a human figure, points to the possibility of shape-shifting, of external reality not being as stable as it might seem on the surface. This is a major theme explored in the novel. This Way to the Curious Land of the Secret Heart seeks to disrupt the space between what is considered the adult narrative and the narrative constructed with the audience of the child in mind. The purpose is to render psychologically accurate and compelling stories that acknowledge that even as we grow up, the child, with all her fears, fantasies, hopes, and imaginative heart is never lost or left behind.

Optimisation of Aspects of Rotor Blades Using Computational Fluid Dynamics

release date: Jan 01, 2012
Optimisation of Aspects of Rotor Blades Using Computational Fluid Dynamics
This work presents a framework for the optimisation of various aspects of rotor blades in forward flight. The literature survey suggests that the quest for such a method is generating much research as more performance is obtainable from current designs. With increasing computational power and efficient methods, this can be of practical use to the helicopter industry. The proposed method employs CFD in conjunction with metamodels such as artificial neural networks (ANNs) and kriging interpolation, and a non-gradient based optimiser, in the form of genetic algorithms (GAs), for optimisation. The approach is demonstrated using several cases, including the optimisation of linear twist of rotors in hover (a steady case) and the optimisation of rotor sections in forward flight (an unsteady case); other cases include transonic aerofoils, wing and rotor tip planforms. For rotor tip planforms, first a simple rectangular rotor in hover was optimised. Then the developed method was used to optimise the anhedral and sweep of the UH60-A rotor blade in forward flight while constraining its hover performance and the final rotor optimisation was for a BERP-like rotor in forward flight, also constraining hover performance. For each case, a parameterisation method was defined, a specific objective function created using the initial CFD data and the metamodel was used for evaluating the objective function during the optimisation using the GAs. The obtained results suggest optima in agreement with engineering intuition but provide precise information about the shape of the final lifting surface and its performance. The results were checked by comparison with the Pareto subset of data and the metamodels were also validated with high-fidelity CFD data. Neither was sensitive to the employed techniques with substantial overlap between the outputs of the selected methods. The main CPU cost was associated with the population of the CFD database necessary for the metamodel. To improve this further, the Harmonic Balance alternative for obtaining the CFD data (as opposed to Time Marching) was used to increase efficiency and reduce clock time for the BERP-like tip optimisation. The novelty of this method is the use of a metamodel in conjunction with high-fidelity CFD data so that high-resolution performance improvements can be captured efficiently using a non-gradient based method.

Ashleigh Carter is no stranger to crime, but she's no criminal; or at least, not technically. By association she's as guilty as sin. Her father is President of the Priests MC, a motorcycle club that rides on the wrong side of the law. Paul 'Shark' Reardon is caught in the middle. What starts out as a simple, yet dangerous, mission for his club, the Rabid Dogs MC is soon complicated by acceptance, friendship and a blue-eyed blonde who is very definitely off-limits. Somewhere in the middle of the plots and lies is a chance for love, if everyone can just make it out the other side alive.

The Power of Stories
"Drawing upon a rich trove of behavioral science, our book highlights fascinating and important insights about emotional intelligence, explaining emotional intelligence in an approachable and accessible way. We apply these insights to daily life using stories that reveal the timeless wisdom of the Bible and the divinity within us. Our book's strength is in its storytelling. Early readers describe it as captivating, inspiring, a page-turner, hard to put down. We profile real people in this book. The Biblical people we highlight are men and women from the Old and New Testaments. They are young and old, wealthy, and poor. They are the esteemed of society and the shunned. Their stories bring the Bible to life, showing that humanity knows no bounds of time or place. The modern-day individuals we profile are black and white, male and female. They range in age from twenty to ninety-four, and are lawyers, authors, entrepreneurs, parents, students, physicians, professors, and community activists. They are also alcoholics, victims of child abuse, have dealt with mental illness, struggle with career choices, known unbearable grief, and survived life-threatening illness"--
