Fields of Battle

Fields of Battle
A riveting story of football, wartime, and boys becoming men—from facing off in the 1942 Rose Bowl to serving together in WWII. In the wake of the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the 1942 Rose Bowl was moved from Pasadena to Durham, North Carolina, out of fear of Japanese attacks on the West Coast. Duke University faced off against underdog Oregon State College, with both teams preparing for a grueling fight on the football field while their thoughts drifted to the battlefields they would soon encounter. On New Year’s Day, the teams played one of the most unforgettable games in history. Shortly afterward, many of the players and coaches entered the military and would quickly become brothers on the battlefield. Scattered around the globe, the lives of Rose Bowl participants would intersect in surprising ways, as they served in Iwo Jima and Normandy, Guadalcanal and the Battle of the Bulge. In one powerful encounter, OSC’s Frank Parker saved the life of Duke’s Charles Haynes in Italy. And one OSC player, Jack Yoshihara, a Japanese-American, never had the chance to play in the game or serve his country, as he was sent to an internment camp in Idaho. In Fields of Battle, Brian Curtis sheds light on a little-known slice of American history with an intimate account of the teamwork, grit, and determination that took these men onto the gridiron and into combat.

What Pisses Me Off About The Good Ol' USA

release date: Aug 24, 2015
What Pisses Me Off About The Good Ol' USA
What Pisses Me Off About The Good Ol’ USA is a topical review of current affairs and national issues that represents the views of most Americans. This book represents those Americans who do not have the ability to speak out or who are afraid to speak out due to political correctness. This book dives into many issues that have destroyed the fabric of our society that our fore fathers fought so hard to provide for future generations under the US Constitution and the Bill Of Rights. The title reflects what is wrong with our society and country and tells it in a straight-forward manner. Brian Curtis discusses issues affecting our national security, our financial well-being, our moral and ethical compass, our faith, our misguided political behavior, equality, unlawful behavior, and lastly our inability to reduce the size of government that has turned our country into a nanny state and a co-dependent country. This title reflects years of frustration over the inability of our countrymen to rise up and put a stop to political correctness forever. This book reveals the frustrations, the bold-face lies and deceit, and the weakness of our countrymen to stand up and correct the direction this country is heading. This topical review clearly brings many issues to the forefront that need to be discussed, analyzed, broken down and corrected to save ourselves from the juggernaut of a society that is lost, confused, and misguided. This book is a wake up call to step up to the plate, swing the bat, and run the bases full speed with no interference. Read on my friends and enjoy the ride.

A Team to Believe in

release date: Jan 01, 2008
A Team to Believe in
After a tough 2006 season, the New York Giants appeared to be heading for more disappointment–and potential shake-ups–in the coming season. Instead, they fought their way to an unforgettable Super Bowl finish against the previously undefeated New England Patriots. In A Team to Believe In, head coach Tom Coughlin gives the ultimate insider’s account of the Giants’ 2007 campaign and reflects on the resilience and selflessness that allowed the team to succeed. Behind the saga of persistence and on-the-field triumphs, however, is the story of how Coughlin, a proud and intensely private man, often mischaracterized by the press as a strict disciplinarian, has continually made subtle adjustments to his approach to the game and to the new players. Whether giving the right speech for the right occasion, drawing media criticism away from his players, or fostering team unity with offbeat events and smartly timed relaxed curfews, Coughlin approached the season willing to make the necessary changes to his management style–and the team followed. In gripping detail, Coughlin takes us on the Giants improbable 2007 journey: the tough staffing and free-agency decisions; the early-season setbacks that again placed the team in the media’s crosshairs; late-season near misses, comeback victories, and goal-line stands; the play-off march through Tampa Bay and Dallas and the overtime victory against Green Bay in the subzero cold of Lambeau Field; and the amazing two weeks that ended with Super Bowl XLII. Along the way, Coughlin explains what life experiences prepared him for the season’s challenges and what lessons helped his team achieve a string of improbable victories. The 2007 New York Giants are an inspiring example of team and trust, hope and perseverance, and A Team to Believe In is the thrilling story of their astounding underdog season.

Go Long!

release date: Jan 16, 2007
Go Long!
Jerry Rice has been called the best pro football player ever. In spite of Rice’s legendary gridiron skills, or even his ability to transform himself into an instant ballroom-dance prodigy on ABC’s hit TV series Dancing with the Stars, the surprising fact is, a guy like Jerry Rice is made and not just born. In Go Long! Rice shares the inspirational lessons and empowering practices that have helped him attain success, both on the football field and off. Through the ups and downs of Rice’s life and incomparable career, we discover how self-motivation, determination, and humility are the keys to achievement and true fulfillment. It’s been a long journey for Jerry Rice, from his childhood in Starkville, Mississippi, to a certain berth in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. As a kid, he was always working toward something, even if he wasn’t sure what it was. Rice honed his hand-eye coordination by catching airborne bricks tossed by his siblings while on the job with their bricklayer father, and he ran–everywhere. From these humble beginnings, Rice blazed a path to greatness in college and the NFL–a trip that was fueled by tireless effort and belief in a few simple principles, among them that achievement is a voyage, not a destination; that modesty and perseverance, not talent, are what determine how far you will go; and that everyone should strive to be a role model. Rice even demonstrates these rules in action, breaking down the greatest games from his stellar career. Go Long! is an inspiring book by a living sports legend. More than that, however, it is the story of how Jerry Rice awakened the champion within, illustration how we can unlock the greatness within ourselves.

Complementary Use of Computer Simulations and Molecular-thermodynamic Theory to Model Surfactant and Solubilizate Self-assembly

Complementary Use of Computer Simulations and Molecular-thermodynamic Theory to Model Surfactant and Solubilizate Self-assembly
(cont.) This thesis presents a detailed, atomistic-level computer simulation and molecular-thermodynamic investigation of the micellar solution behavior of nonionic, zwitterionic, and ionic surfactants in aqueous solutions, as well as of the aqueous micellar solubilization of solubilizates by surfactants. It is hoped that the approaches developed in this thesis to use computer simulations and molecular-thermodynamic theory in a complementary way will not only extend our ability to make accurate predictions of surfactant solution behavior, but will also contribute to our fundamental knowledge of the solution behavior of surfactants and solubilizates. It is further hoped that this thesis will provide a solid foundation for future research in the area of surfactant science, and, more generally, that it will assist future researchers working to connect atomistic-level computer simulation methods with continuum thermodynamic models.

Topologies for Ad-hoc Networks Utilizing Directional Antennas with Restricted Fields of View

Topologies for Ad-hoc Networks Utilizing Directional Antennas with Restricted Fields of View
ORCLE (Optical/RF Combined Link Experiment), is an airborne network in which aircraft have multiple directional antennas that are restricted in their pointing direction. A pair of aircraft in ORCLE can be linked if they both have an antenna pointing at each other. Four topology algorithms, which coordinate the pointing of the antennas and attempt to maximize a connectedness metric, are presented and analyzed using a custom 2D simulation platform. Three of the algorithms are based on the Relative Neighbor Graph (RNG): the first constrains the RNG to requirements of the ORCLE network, the second augments the constrained RNG with edges from the Delaunay Triangulation, and the third algorithm tries to improve on the second by adding edges to reduce the diameter. The final algorithm uses a novel concept of overlapping sets of nested convex hulls to select the links of the network. All algorithms are stateless and interface with a Target Transition Layer, which gradually migrates topologies to prevent a large number of edges from being lost simultaneously. Scenes with varying node density, number of terminals per node, fields of view, and re-targeting delays are used to test the algorithms against a wide range of possible situations.

Development of Novel Polymeric Materials for Gene Therapy and PH-sensitive Drug Delivery

release date: Jan 01, 2002
Development of Novel Polymeric Materials for Gene Therapy and PH-sensitive Drug Delivery
The aim of this work was to obtain a fundamental understanding of drug release mechanisms from polymers that undergo thermoreversible gelation and to synthesize new polymers based on these that exhibit both pH and temperature sensitivity. Novel block and random copolymers with cationic character have been developed for drug delivery and gene therapy applications. The development of these materials began with a study of the mechanism of drug release from poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and poly(propylene oxide) (PPO) block copolymers. This study revealed the release rates of drugs from water-soluble hydrogels composed of the PEO-PPO-PEO block copolymer Pluronic F127 was dictated almost solely by the rate of interfacial dissolution at the water/gel interface. A setup was designed to measure drug release from such soluble systems in order to avoid confounding hydrodynamic effects as a result of shear on the delicate polymer/gel interface. This study was followed by a complementary analysis of the effect ionic salts play in the phase transitions and drug release profiles in aqueous F127 solutions. In an attempt to incorporate pH sensitivity into such drug release systems, several block copolymers of poly (N, N-diethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PDEAEM), PEO, and PPO were synthesized via anionic polymerization. Diblock materials (PEO-b-PDEAEM), either with or without a carboxylic acid endcap, were synthesized and characterized. Tablet dissolution experiments demonstrated pH-sensitivity in their drug release profiles relative to PEO tablets. Pentablock materials (PDEAEM-b-PEO-b-PPO-b-PEO-b-PDEAEM) were synthesized that maintain the thermoreversible gelation and micellization properties of F127 while introducing pH-dependent release from aqueous gels of the copolymer. This is the first example of non-crosslinked materials that exhibit both pH- and temperature-sensitive behavior. Using a similar synthesis route, random copolymers of PDEAEM and poly(poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate)) (PEGME) were synthesized which are water soluble and non-crytotoxic, whereas homopolymers of PDEAEM are neither. These materials have potential as gene therapy vectors.
