This dissertation addresses the implementation of high-electron-mobility transistor (HEMT) based gallium nitride (GaN) varactors and compares them to barium strontium titanate (BST) parallel plate varactors in terms of tunability, quality factor, power handling capability, and size. New designs of multilayered BST varactor devices that utilize three-dimensional packaging of high dielectric ferroelectric materials are described. These structures are designed to improve device quality, while also generating new geometries that explore device physics that have not been previously explored with barium strontium titanate.A GaN foundry process was used to fabricate two varactor topologies, and devices have measured tunability exceeding 40%. Capacitance voltage relationships of the varactors are compared to intrinsic capacitances of transistors of the same gate periphery and bias voltages. Correlations between measurements are described with findings that will support design success of future GaN based varactors.A 1-Port BST varactor device was also generated, and the resulting capacitance has more than 60% tunability in a 0.135 mm2 total device size. The resulting device geometry is similar to those of previous designs and allows for a direct comparison to the measured performance of 1-Port GaN varactor devices.Nonlinear device models are generated for each varactor technology and used in the design of a radio frequency filter implemented on a printed circuit board. The same filter is used with both GaN and BST varactors so tests of the RF signal power handling capability as well as bias power consumption are compared.

The aim of this thesis is to create a set of usability heuristics for the evaluation and design of computer games. The first three chapters discuss the areas of computer gaming and usability in detail and the problems that emerge when applying usability methods to computer game design. The conclusion of this discussion is that usability methods specific to computer game design are needed to improve the design process, and to propose the creation of a set of Computer Game Usability Heuristics (CGUH). Chapters four, five and six deal with the creation of the heuristics. Initially data was gathered about game playing experiences from 116 participants using Critical Incidentence Technique (CIT). This data was analysed using content analysis and seven categories of problems were discovered that were relevant to usability. These categories were compared with current heuristics and used to create an initial list of thirteen heuristics. In order to refine these heuristics further, a panel of usability and computer games design experts reviewed the initial heuristics. Following the integration of their comments, a final set of nine heuristics is presented. Chapters seven to eleven describe and discuss a series of three validations used to compare the heuristics to other evaluation methods. The validation used the following methods to evaluate three different games; Subjective Mental Effort Questionnaire (SMEQ), Software Usability Measurement Inventory (SMUI), Play Testing, General Usability Heuristics and the Computer Game Usability Heuristics (CGUH) developed earlier. The first evaluation studied Dawn of War, a PC real-time strategy game set in a science fiction universe. The second looked at Demon Stone, an action-adventure game on the Play Station 2. Finally, the third study evaluated Baldur{u2019}s Gate, one of the first role-playing games to be developed for the PC. The results produced by the evaluation on each of the games are discussed and compared and it is found that CGUH perform the best at both discovering critical problems and providing clear feedback. Chapter 12 discusses the implications of this research, as well as limitations of the methods used. Finally suggestions are made for future research.
