Selected Poems

release date: Nov 14, 2024
Selected Poems
The Selected Poems of Bermudian poet Nancy Anne Miller traces the decades she has been writing about her homeland, with the use of image metaphor as her primary tool for revealing Bermuda''s complexities. Her choice of this technique is to consciously break apart linear intentional thinking or the masculine sentence as Woolf referenced. For Miller, the use of image metaphor allows a poem''s meaning to radiate across the entire poem as one thing is reflected through another in a circular movement, hence preventing one final climatic interpretation. She states: "The island''s history cannot be written down in a straight line" - and sees this as a female-voiced way of being a poet, one that is inclusive, layered, and exploratory.

Because There Was No Sea

release date: Nov 07, 2014
Because There Was No Sea
"Because There Was No Sea combines a mastery of simile (the ''jaws'' of bicycle brakes snapping at the wind ''like two dogs''; a golf ball hit ''like a semibreve into/ the staff of phone lines'') with a Blake-like ability to build whole worlds from a grain of sand (or a phone, which ''may as well be a conch/from off the beach''). This is a restless, Janus-faced collection, simultaneously looking back on childhood memories of Bermuda (''alive, fresh as raw meat'') and thirstily drinking in the details of the wider world." --Jacob Silkstone, editor of The Missing Slate "Nancy Anne Miller''s poems embrace island icons with a ruthless tenderness, teasing out their secrets and accepting with equal enthusiasm their surface beauty and their burdened hearts. Miller approaches the island''s difficult colonial history from a position of exile and with a wondrous ability to find and restore the paradisiacal as she explores the mysteries of one place through the lens of the other." --Kim Aubrey, author of What We Hold in Our Hands "Like hand-cut stones strung along a necklace, each of Miller''s poems is its own gem. Untethered by theme, each page is a new discovery: a childhood memory, a lusty evocation of the landscape, an observation of passersby. We journey into these experiences finding fresh perspectives on our Island home. The imagery is alive; the author makes nature an active character." --Lisa Howie, Director of Bermuda National Gallery With a painter''s eye, Nancy Anne Miller reveals the complexity of a British semitropical island almost seven hundred miles out at sea. Her use of simile and image metaphor at work in each poem, echo and reinforce the constant comparison of two very different cultures. The reader is in a house of mirrors as each poem turns them into an immigrant traversing a colonial childhood, the surreal trappings of tourism, the effects of weather and ocean on identity, and note a class system where the remnants of slavery still reside.

How to Get Your Ideas Adopted (And Change the World)

release date: Jan 01, 2009
How to Get Your Ideas Adopted (And Change the World)
This book is for anyone who ever had an idea for making the world a slightly better place but no one would listen. Or if they did listen, they said it wouldn''t work. Or it was too risky, or not their area or they just made so many objections that you got fed up and dropped the whole thing... How to Get Your Ideas Adoptedwill change all that. This important, enjoyable and stimulating book explains why it''s so difficult to get a new idea adopted, and how to get your ideas taken seriously and put into action. The environmental, social and economic changes facing us today mean that new ideas are more urgently required than ever and yet they are too often met with total resistance. How to Get Your Ideas Adoptedexplains why and, more importantly, what you can do about it. Carrying on from where Malcolm Gladwell''s The Tipping Pointleft off, it also explains how to prepare your ideas and your outlook to give you the best chance of success, and then reveals the secrets of overcoming the four critical stages of resistance from others. Anne Miller is probably one of the world''s most successful female inventors. Freely crossing the boundaries between technological innovation, business and social change, and drawing on practical psychology and illuminating case studies from her own and others experiences, her exhilarating manifesto for how creativity can make a difference is both a practical guide to bringing ideas to fruition, and an inspiring demonstration of the power of individuals to make the world a better place.

Boiling Hot

release date: Jul 04, 2018
Boiling Hot
Inspired by her birthplace, Bermuda, Miller successfully blurs the line between exploiting and normalizing the exotic: a seahorse is both the f hole of a cello and a horseshoe pick; the Sand Dollar, an oddity found regularly on the island''s beaches, is compared to an antique star map; a clock in an old supply store is "a porthole with the sea lapping its blue rim." But if they reference and conjure the exotic, Miller''s poems are grounded by the realities of everyday life and by the sometimes troubled cultural dynamics of both her adopted United States and her island home, where "everything seen tribal" and, in the title poem, where someone "claiming a geography of persons the empire sent across the world" dons white gloves to serve sandwiches to "fair English" church-goers. These are poems that are like "the ocean''s ripples when an anchor strikes deep." Paul Sean Maddern, poet, author of The Beachcomber''s Report The poems of Nancy Miller are deliciously rich in imagery and metaphor. There is a subtle complexity of meaning embedded in them, enhanced by her intuitive ability to make music with words. John Lyons. Painter, poet, author of No Apples in Eden: New and Selected poems Nancy Anne Miller pushes each poem of her newest collection, Boiling Hot into a performance of music and meaning. Equipped with an anthropologist''s eye and a polymath''s mind, her poems play with ordinary materials, reveal how the "repeated shedding" of a snake''s skin "leaves the tape measure of what it was." Through Miller''s examination of history and identity, old Empire relics collide with New World knickknacks, poems tackle the thorny legacies of England, Bermuda and New England. In one poem, an antique star map, "round as a crystal ball," harkens the child''s circle of marbles, where "large planets knock out smaller ones: taws hit pewees." Typing on her Olivetti in another poem Miller declares: "If I could make [writing] precise...[and] ceremonial I would." In the deft and dazzling Boiling Hot: she does. Queen Palm

release date: Nov 01, 2023
Queen Palm
In Queen Palm, internationally-published poet Nancy Anne Miller takes readers on a captivating journey into the rich iconography and metaphors of the Christmas season. Through four distinct sections, Miller explores the unique blend of African/English influences found in Bermudian customs, the vibrant and sometimes extravagant American celebrations, the symbolism of Advent, and the poet''s personal creative process. The book concludes with a thought-provoking selection of Biblically-inspired poems. While delving into the exploration of language and imagery, the poems also carry a spiritual undertone, inviting readers to embark on both a poetic inquiry and a sacred quest. Queen Palm celebrates the power of Christmas as a transformative and introspective time, where the boundaries of poetry and spirituality merge seamlessly.

Start with House, Finish with a Collection is the story of how a couple''s use of American art and antiques evolved from furnishing a house into a full-blown passion for collecting. Star Map

release date: Jan 01, 2016
Star Map
In STAR MAP Nancy Anne Miller writes through the four seasons of Northwestern Connecticut beginning with winter in "It Hints of Madness" with "icicles/ drooling from roofs, constant snow/ a kind of foaming" and ending in autumn, when she opens the poem "Tonic" with "Who knew death could dazzle?" These poems cover the decades Miller has lived in a bucolic setting. They show her early alignment with the British School of Martian Poetry and the years she learned to interpret the seasons through Dickey''s "adventure of metaphor." In the poem "Star Map," "The frost on my windshield with/ connecting white stellar shapes is/ a star map to guide me." The collection steadily maps a Bermudian poet coming to terms with a new country where New England is "Not England" and instead is a place: "four full/ seasons the terrain changes into, / a mad search for identity and whom to be."

Metaphorically Selling
You might say that author Anne Miller is like a homeowner who strikes oil while digging a ditch in the backyard. In this book, she shares knowledge she refined from more than 20 years of distilling metaphors. Her book leaves little doubt that metaphors can fuel the engines of your sales success. Its pages are full of colorful, persuasive anecdotes and analogies that follow one another like racecars coming out of Turn Four at Daytona. If you doubt whether her advice will apply to the rubber-meets-the-road realities of sales, just take Miller''s ideas out for a test drive. Her primary expertise is in presentations, not sales, which may explain why her roadmap (note the extended metaphor) to success is so much more creative than most sales advice. Miller''s book leaves many other tomes in the dust. getAbstract.com thinks sales professionals who read this book and master the art of the metaphor should get ready to take a victory lap or two.
