ABSTRACT: Because of the high prevalence of body dissatisfaction and its negative consequences a meta-analysis of the effects of exercise interventions on body image is timely. Older meta-analyses of the effects of exercise on body image pooled data from a range of studies that include correlational, quasi-experimental, and experimental exercise designs; with limited examination of moderators. The purpose of my thesis was to meta-analytically examine the impact of exercise interventions on body image; and participant, intervention, and design features that are associated with larger intervention effects. I conducted a systematic literature search and identified 57 exercise interventions (with pre and post data for both the exercise and control groups) examining the effects of chronic exercise on body image (N Total [equal] 6,273, Experimental N [equal] 3,639, Control N [equal] 2,634). The quality of studies varied. For the analyses, I used Comprehensive Meta-analysis-2. I found a small random effect (effect size [equal] 0.29) indicating that exercise interventions resulted in improved body image compared to control conditions; and that participant (i.e., age), design (i.e., year of publication), and intervention (i.e., exercise frequency and specificity) features moderated the size of the effect. The results of my study indicate that chronic exercise does lead to improvements in body image. Further research is needed examining the mechanisms and the exercise dose-response needed for this change in body image.

The incretin glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) is a rhythmically secreted insulin-secretion enhancing hormone produced in the intestinal L-cell. The increasing incidence of Type 2 Diabetes warrants the advent of new therapies that can increase endogenous GLP-1 secretion, which will manipulate regulatory L-cell secretory pathways such as exocytosis. Three exocytotic proteins have already been identified as regulators of GLP-1 secretion. I hypothesized that the accessory exocytotic protein, Munc18-1, is also an important regulator of GLP-1 secretion in the L-cell - specifically at the peak of its secretion. Munc18-1 expression in many, but not all L-cells was confirmed, and its recruitment to the cell membrane was observed under stimulation. The role of Munc18-1 in GLP-1 secretion was established by loss-of-function experiments in the Munc18-1 knockdown mGLUTag L-cell line, inducible L-cell Munc18-1 knockout mice and primary Munc18-1 knockout L-cells. Together, the results indicate that Munc18-1 is an essential regulator of peak GLP-1 secretion.

Emotion processing involves attending to and recognising emotional stimuli, as well as experiencing a feeling of emotion and expressing an emotional reaction. Age-related differences in the processing of emotions are apparent when comparing older (over 60 years) and young (18-30years) participants. Oxytocin has been shown to increase emotion recognition and some measures that are associated with emotional responses in young adults. The findings are not consistent though, and the effects of oxytocin are often moderated by internal and external factors, such as baseline social proficiency. There is reason to think that oxytocin could improve emotion processing in older adults. This was examined in two studies testing emotion recognition and emotion experience. In the first study, 68 older and 68 young adults were randomly allocated to receive oxytocin nasal spray (20IU) or placebo using a double-blind design. Forty-five minutes after receiving the spray, participants completed a range of tasks to assess accuracy in emotion recognition, including a basic emotion recognition task, the Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test, and an emotion-matching task. During the basic emotion recognition task and the RMET, participants wore an eye-tracking device.

This thesis is a study of St Colette of Corbie (1381-1447), a Franciscan reformer in fifteenth- century France who was canonized in 1807. It aims to locate Colette in her own historical context of the traumatic transition from medieval to early modem Europe, and assess whether the events and actions of her life merited the reputation she earned for holiness and the creation of a posthumous cult. It further aims to trace the factors which both enabled her cult to survive throughout the period of the Reformation, Counter-Reformation and Enlightenment, and yet delayed her canonization until the beginning of the period of Napoleonic in Europe. Part One questions the reliability of the hagiographical construction of identity through the analysis of primary documentation in order to build an historical portrait of Colette. It establishes Colette in her Franciscan setting, examining her Franciscan influences and her specific Franciscan calling. It analyses the relationship and tensions between Colette''s reforms and the Franciscan Observant reforms. It makes a thorough analysis of the reform''s complex and political network of patrons; and seeks to determine how Colette is able to negotiate both political and religious power-politics in order to both satisfy her patrons and further the reforms.
