Coliforms and Enterococci as Indicators of Possible Breeding Sites of Stomoxys Calcitrans (Linnaeus)

Coliforms and Enterococci as Indicators of Possible Breeding Sites of Stomoxys Calcitrans (Linnaeus)
This study is intended to determine if Stomoxys calcitrans (stable fly) could be sourced to both farms and accumulated piles of lakeshore vegetation. Various preceding studies have indicated that Stomoxys calcitrans may disperse up to five miles in less than two hours. It is not unreasonable to suspect that farms could be a significant source of flies at beaches, even at distances of several miles. One approach to gaining a clue as to the importance of farms as a source of beach flies might be to determine the incidence of certain fecal bacteria of vertebrates in field populations of Stomoxys.
