S.B. Kelley Papers

S.B. Kelley Papers
The S.B. Kelley Papers consist of ca. 150 items including letters, diaries, and military documents, spanning the years 1860-1867. The focal point of the collection is the letters written by S.B. Kelley to his mother, Mary Ann Kelley, and his sister, Sylvinia Kelley, in Schenevus, New York, from 1860 until his death in 1865. These letters, along with diaries kept by Kelley from June 1863 to December 1864, describe Kelley's work as a clerk in Cooperstown, his motivations for enlisting in the War, his experiences in battles and camps during the Civil War, and his time in captivity as a prisoner of war. Other correspondence in the collection documents Mary Ann Kelley's concern for her dying son and her struggle to claim her pension from the U.S. government.
