Racism and Everyday Life

release date: Apr 29, 2016
Racism and Everyday Life
What does it mean to talk about everyday racism, and why should we do so? Racism and Everyday Life brings together the sociologies of racism and everyday life in a new way in order to reflect on these questions. Smith argues that racism and everyday life are not just ''act'' and ''context'' respectively, but rather they are part of the making of each other. Using a variety of historical and contemporary examples, this book draws on the pioneering insights of W.E.B. Du Bois and other writers in order to explore the interwoven relationship between racism and the everyday.

Plotinus on Beauty (Enneads 1.6 and 5.8.1–2)

release date: Nov 01, 2019
Plotinus on Beauty (Enneads 1.6 and 5.8.1–2)
A Greek edition of Plotinus''s philosophical works with notes for students of Classical Greek Plotinus, the father of Neoplatonism, composed the treatise On Beauty (Ennead 1.6) as the first of a series of philosophical essays devoted to interpreting and elucidating Platonic ideas. This treatise is one of the most accessible and influential of Plotinus''s works, and it provides a stimulating entrée into the many facets of his philosophical activity. In this volume Andrew Smith first introduces readers to the Greek of Plotinus and to his philosophy in general, then provides the Greek text of and English notes on Plotinus''s systematic argument and engaging exhortation to foster the inner self. The volume ends with the text of and notes on Plotinus''s complementary statements in On Intelligible Beauty (Ennead 5.8.1–2). Features: An overview of Plotinus''s life Background discussion of Plotinus''s thought and outline of his philosophical system Analysis of the relationship of Plotinus''s thought to Plato’s

Plotinus, Porphyry and Iamblichus

release date: Oct 28, 2024
Plotinus, Porphyry and Iamblichus
This selection of twenty-five essays by Andrew Smith is devoted to Neoplatonism and especially to Plotinus and Porphyry. It deals with Plotinus'' development of the Platonic Forms, and includes a lengthy assessment of Porphyry''s contribution to the Platonic tradition. The themes also embrace a number of issues that have become particularly prominent in the more recent growth of interest in these philosophers of late antiquity. For example, the importance of practical ethical activity is examined particularly in the case of Plotinus and it is argued from several perspectives that a theoretical basis for reconciling the life of contemplation with that of everyday living may be found in his metaphysics. This also involves his speculations on time and eternity as well as his observations about human consciousness. A closer examination of the role of religion, magic and myth in the life of the philosopher reveals a much richer and more nuanced appreciation of their importance than has been accorded them by an earlier generation of scholars. In particular the contribution of Iamblichus is recognised as a profound attempt to account for divine activity in the world and the first attempt to propose a solution to the problems involved in presenting metaphysics of religious ritual.

Gothic death 1740–1914

release date: Sep 01, 2016
Gothic death 1740–1914
Gothic death 1740-1914 explores the representations of death and dying in Gothic narratives published between the mid-eighteenth century and the beginning of the First World War. The book investigates how eighteenth century Graveyard Poetry and the tradition of the elegy produced a version of death that underpinned ideas about empathy and models of textual composition. Later accounts of melancholy, as in the work of Ann Radcliffe and Mary Shelley, emphasise the literary construction of death. The shift from writing death to interpreting the signs of death is explored in relation to the work of Poe, Emily Brontë and George Eliot. A chapter on Dickens examines the significance of graves and capital punishment during the period. A chapter on Haggard, Stoker and Wilde explores conjunctions between love and death and a final chapter on Machen and Stoker explores how scientific ideas of the period help to contextualise a specifically fin de siècle model of death.

Wild Beasts and Angels

Wild Beasts and Angels
This book of poems comes from an honest attempt to put the spiritual highs and lows of one person into verse but it also tries to find clues to living the life of Faith by following our great heroes. The poems also tackle some of the crises we have faced recently as well as the pain we all encounter through life. Wild Beasts and Angels is a strange title, so I should explain. In the Gospel according to St Mark, the temptation of Jesus is described as an experience linking earth and heaven, “he was with the wild beasts, and the angels waited on him” (Mark 1:13). Perhaps St Mark is trying to say that our Lord Jesus holds within himself both the things of this world and the things of heaven. The Christian seasons of Lent and Easter teach us about how to deal with the things of “the world” as well as how to embrace, with joy, the glimpses of heaven. Many of the poems are rooted in these seasons. This process has been joyful and has drawn me forward and upward every step of the way. I hope that you will also find some food for your soul.

Class and the Uses of Poetry

release date: Aug 17, 2024
Class and the Uses of Poetry
This book provides new empirical evidence about the ways in which social inequalities, especially those of class, shape and delimit forms of cultural reception and creative opportunity. How does it come about that, in George Orwell’s words, ‘the divorce between poetry and popular culture is accepted as a sort of law of nature’? Drawing on qualitative research conducted in and around Glasgow, Poetry, Class and Symbolic Violence explores how working-class readers engaged with, made sense of, and contested a sense of exclusion from, contemporary poetry. In doing so it sheds light on the symbolic enclosure of poetry, on how that enclosure takes shape in the encounter between readers and poems, but also on why poetry continues to matter. Through these conversations, and in further interviews with unpublished poets, it reflects on the creative and expressive affordances of poetry, on what can be done with poetry and what it can make possible. Sociologists have had little to say about poetry as a distinctive esthetic practice. Poetry, Class and Symbolic Violence tries to break that silence and to make a start on constructing a critical sociology of poetry for today.

British Businessmen and Canadian Confederation

release date: Jul 16, 2008
British Businessmen and Canadian Confederation
Andrew Smith discusses the role of British investors in Canadian Confederation, covering the period from the construction of the Grand Trunk Railroad in the 1850s to Canada''s purchase of Rupert''s Land in 1869-70. He describes how some investors lobbied the British government for the policies that made Confederation possible, working closely with the Fathers of Confederation, many of whom were participants in the same trans-Atlantic crony-capitalist system. British factory owners with classical liberal beliefs, however, disliked Confederation because they believed it would delay the political independence of the North American colonies, something they saw as beneficial.

Events in the City

release date: Nov 19, 2015
Events in the City
Cities are staging more events than ever. Within this macro-trend, there is another less acknowledged trend: more events are being staged in public spaces. Some events have always been staged in parks, streets and squares, but in recent years events have been taken out of traditional venues and staged in prominent urban spaces. This is favoured by organisers seeking more memorable and more spectacular events, but also by authorities who want to animate urban space and make it more visible. This book explains these trends and outlines the implications for public spaces. Events play a positive role in our cities, but turning public spaces into venues is often controversial. Events can denigrate as well as animate city space; they are part of the commercialisation, privatisation and securitisation of public space noted by commentators in recent years. The book focuses on examples from London in particular, but it also covers a range of other cities from the developed world. Events at different scales are addressed and, there is dedicated coverage of sports events and cultural events. This topical and timely volume provides valuable material for higher level students, researchers and academics from events studies, urban studies and development studies.
