Between Dog and Wolf

release date: Nov 21, 2011
Between Dog and Wolf
Dogs are dogs and wolves are wolves. Except when they aren''t! Most scientists now agree that the dog is a subspecies of wolf Canis lupus familiaris. And while most wolves look and act differently from most dogs, it can be very hard to make accurate identifications, especially since wolves and dogs can and do interbreed and certain breeds of dogs look and act a lot like wolves. Having spent years employed at Wolf Park, in Indiana, authors Jessica Addams and Andrew Miller have encountered hundreds of so-called wolves that turned out to be dogs, hybrids that exhibit the characteristics of both wolves and dogs, and even pure wolves that act like dogs. Between Dog and Wolf takes a fascinating look at how wolves and dogs are related, why they can be so hard to tell apart and what rescue organizations need to know when they encounter a canine of unknown origins. You will learn: How and why there are so many misconceptions about wolf behavior. What evolutionary forces turned good social hunters (wolves) into animals whose key adaptation was to become good with people (dogs). Which physical and behavioral characteristics displayed by an animal tend to indicate it''s a dog vs. a wolf usually! The state of DNA testing and what it can and can''t tell you about the genetic make-up of dogs and wolves. Praise for Between Dog and Wolf Well written, thoroughly researched and grounded in science, this book is a must-read for all shelter personnel, as well as anyone who wants a deeper insight into the often misunderstood animals known as wolfdogs. Nicole Wilde, author Living with Wolfdogs and Wolfdogs A-Z Intelligently written, good style, and based on an enlightened experience This could be the best dog/wolf book ever written. Ray Coppinger, co-author Dogs: A New Understanding of Canine Origin, Behavior and Evolution Animal shelters have to make triage decisions all the time with wolf dog hybrids which are usually deemed defacto too dangerous and euthanized unless they can be quickly placed with a qualified hybrid rescue. Addams and Miller provide a book which provides shelter workers the necessary background on behavior traits and guidelines so that decisions can be based on the behavior of the animals in front of them rather than on a questionable label that merely refers to their supposed ancestry. This book gives shelters tools to make humane decisions about animals turned in as wolf dog hybrids. Pat Goodmann, M.S., has worked with Wolf Park''s wolves since 1974, plays a primary role in teaching Wolf Park''s seminars, and guides its behavioral research program. Jessica Addams and Andrew Miller have nearly twenty years of collective work at Wolf Park, a non-profit education and research facility in Battle Ground, Indiana. Both started as visitors, moved up to long-term internships, and eventually became full-time staff. Besides working with wolves, they have always been involved with animals and the study of animal behavior. Their degrees are in biology and wildlife science. Jessica and Andrew own and train their own dogs and other pets, and read

Snowdrops
SHORTLISTED for the 2011 Man Booker Prize for Fiction An intense psychological drama that echoes sophisticated entertainments like Gorky Park and The Talented Mr. Ripley. Nick Platt is a British lawyer working in Moscow in the early 2000s--a place where the cascade of oil money, the tightening grip of the government, the jostling of the oligarchs, and the loosening of Soviet social mores have led to a culture where corruption, decadence, violence, and betrayal define everyday life. Nick doesn''t ask too many questions about the shady deals he works on--he''s too busy enjoying the exotic, surreally sinful nightlife Moscow has to offer. One day in the subway, he rescues two willowy sisters, Masha and Katya, from a would-be purse snatcher. Soon Nick, the seductive Masha, and long-limbed Katya are cruising the seamy glamour spots of the city. Nick begins to feel something for Masha that he is pleased to think is love. Then the sisters ask Nick to help their aged aunt, Tatiana, find a new apartment. Of course, nothing is as it seems--including this extraordinary debut novel. The twists in the story take it far beyond its noirish frame--the sordid and vivid portrayal of Moscow serves as a backdrop for a book that examines the irresistible allure of sin, featuring characters whose hearts are as cold as the Russian winter.

Perce-neige

The Winter Soldiers

release date: May 27, 2004
The Winter Soldiers
When Abraham Lincoln wins reelection in the fall of 1864, it spells final doom for the Confederacy. Driven by desperation and by the odds against them, Southern leaders reach a decision that could bring them sudden, stunning victory: They will kidnap Lincoln from the very streets of Washington, whisk him to Richmond, and hold him for a kings ransom. They will demand the release of all Confederate soldiers being held in Northern prison camps, in addition to $50 million in gold. It will be a devastating blow to Northern morale, restore the wasted Southern armies, and topple the Union government. The man assigned to carry out the operation is Philip Bartlett, the Souths best agent and a spy in Washington since early in the war. Brilliant and ruthless, Bartlett is an aristocrat and a true believer in Southern independence. He has never failed. The spy foresaw this decision by Richmond, but he does not believe in the mission. To Bartlett, failure and success are both the same this time: If successful, he fears what enraged Northern armies will do to the South. If it fails, his remarkable operation in the enemys capital will be destroyed for nothing, and good men along with it. But whether the operation fails or succeeds, the spy knows the South will suffer for it, and the war made even harder on his beloved homeland. Still, he he is a soldier and he will follow orders. Bartletts accomplices will be some of the Souths best cavalrymen, disguised as Union troopers. They will enter Washington the night of the operation, meet the spy, and abduct Lincoln as he takes his nightly stroll near the Executive Mansion. They will dash out of the city, then down dark country roads protected by Southern partisans, and into the Rebel capital. The Confederate spy comes up against an unwitting opponent in Captain Peter Murphy, a young Union officer from a small town in Pennsylvania. Murphy has been damaged by two years of relentless warfare; his sudden bursts of temper and violence have convinced his superiors to send him off to Washington for a few months of rest and recuperation. Murphy is intelligent and sensitive, a teacher and educator before the war, but a man tormented by thoughts that he can never be the person he once was. Murphy has seen combat at Antietam, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, the Shenandoah Valley, and a dozen other places. He is wracked with guilt and confusion at having survived when so many others have fallen. When he is ordered to Washington, he must leave his friends and comrades in the Army of the Potomac, a painful separation for a man already bearing many physical and mental wounds. Although Philip Bartlett and Peter Murphy come from entirely different worlds, and they could not possibly be more different as human beings, their destinies will meet in Civil War Washington.

Modernism, Ireland and the Erotics of Memory

release date: Sep 19, 2002
Modernism, Ireland and the Erotics of Memory
In Modernism, Ireland and the Erotics of Memory Nicholas Miller re-examines memory and its role in modern Irish culture. Arguing that a continuous renegotiation of memory is characteristic of Irish modernist writing, Miller investigates a series of case-studies in modern Irish historical imagination. He reassesses Ireland''s self-construction through external or ''foreign'' discourses such as the cinema, and proposes readings of Yeats and Joyce as ''counter-memorialists''. Combining theoretical and historical approaches, Miller shows how the modernist handling of history transforms both memory and the story of the past by highlighting readers'' investments in histories that are produced, specifically and concretely, through local acts of reading. This original study will attract scholars of Modernism, Irish studies, film and literary theory.

Studies in the Grammatical Tradition in Tibet

Studies in the Grammatical Tradition in Tibet
This volume reprints — with additions and corrections — seven papers originally published 1962–1973, on the indigenous grammars of Tibet and their linguistic tradition. Two ancient treatises commonly attributed to “Thon-mi Sambhoṭa” are studied extensively, as well as extracts from many other Tibetan texts, with translations, commentaries, and detailed bibliographical data, covering a wide range of linguistic doctrines, from the early 11th to the beginning of the 20th century. The final article incorporates a complete grammatical sketch of Classical Tibetan; this, together with the comprehensive indexes of Tibetan and Indic grammatical and technical terms, proper names, titles, etc., will facilitate the use of the volume as a basic reference-source for all future work on the Tibetan grammarians.
