Burning Houses

release date: Jan 01, 1986
Burning Houses
"In Burning Houses, Andrew Harvey has taken the novel form and extended it to grand opera, with all its glitter and drama, flourish and tragedy. Charles, a writer living Paris, is invited by Adolphe, a famous film director, to read his novel to him. Their meetings enmesh the reader in two plots: one developing in the encounters between Charles and Adolphe; the other contained in Charles''s novel, the account of his relationship with Mark, a married man. Like a turning crystal, the story reveals the facets of love: the sexual passion between Charles and Mark; the long friendship between Charles and Anna (an outspoken beauty who appears in both plots); and the luminous platonic love between Adolphe and Charles that is akin to a merging of souls. Each character undergoes a transformation, a growth into knowledge that brings the reader to a deep understanding of self-awareness through suffering, honesty, and humor"--Dust jacket flap.

Teachings of Rumi

release date: Jul 06, 1999
Teachings of Rumi
A profound, in-depth collection of Rumi''s prose and poetry—from his most celebrated works to his more obscure teachings Jelalludin Rumi (1207-1273) led the quiet life of an Islamic teacher in the central Anatolia (modern Turkey) until the age of thirty-seven, when he met a wandering dervish named Shams Tabriz—through whom he encountered the Divine Presence in a way that utterly transformed him. The result of this epiphany was the greatest body of mystical poetry the world has ever seen, and the establishment of a spiritual movement that would eventually stretch from Africa to China, enduring to our own day. This collection of versions of Rumi by Andrew Harvey contains some of the master''s most luminous verse, along with selections from his lesser-read prose works, with the aim of presenting a balanced view of his teaching that includes both the high-flying love of God and the rigorous path of discipline essential for those who seek it.

Hanut''s moving images and a stunning two-color design make this book a joy for gift giving.

One Heart
The purpose of One Heart is to illuminate the common sacred ground at the heart of seven faiths: Buddhism, Christianity, Confucianism, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, and Taoism. Its method is to identify 65 essential principles, among them: Feel what other people feel; Don''t harm others; Lead with virtue and concern for others; Be honest; Practice what you preach; Be content; Don''t let anger take over; Choose your companions wisely; Accept the existence of spiritual beings; Seek and you will find. Illustrating each principle are one, two, or three quotations (adding up to more than 600) from a wide variety of texts sacred to each of the seven faiths--including the Old and New Testaments, the Talmud, the Mahabarata, the Tao Te Ching, the Bhagavad Gita, the Analects of Confucius, and many other sacred sources. In addition, each chapter also provides guidance on a spiritual theme or practice--prayer beads, a home altar, labyrinth walking--to enhance our understanding of these wise words and universal principles.

The Magdalene Revolution

The Magdalene Revolution
In a radically fresh reading of Mary Magdalene’s story, a renowned scholar of mystical traditions sheds new light on the Divine Feminine as a force for change and healing. For more than 20 years, Andrew Harvey has trained his fine scholar’s eye on sacred texts and mystical truths to illuminate the message of inspired activism that they hold. Today, we need this message more urgently than ever. In this new book, Andrew takes a fresh, impassioned look at the story of Mary Magdalene and Jesus to distill its meaning for our world and show us how to embody this truth in our own lives. The Magdalene Revolution will: Explore how Mary Magdalene is presented in the New Testament—sometimes splendidly, but also absurdly and even dangerously Propose a radical reclamation of the divine feminine by recognizing Mary Magdalene as the Bride to Jesus’s Bridegroom—a female and co-equal Christ in her own right Illuminate a new paradigm of fully embodied divine and human love that each of us can live out in our daily lives “We are in the time of the Second Coming,” Andrew writes. “The old story is dying, and a new story with Mary Magdalene’s and Jesus''s love at the center is being born, because it completes and activates the full range of Christ consciousness.” In Mary Magdalene''s great spirit of healing and transfiguration, this book offers us this new human story—and a path to transform not only ourselves, but our world.

Hasidic Tales
The Tales of the Hasidic Masters Can Become a Companion for Your Own Spiritual Journey. ''''''''The wisdom of the Hasidim is earthy, realistic, rooted in the simplicity of the heart. It is alive with the awareness of the holiness of Creation and the boundlessness of God''s mercy, and is utterly honest about the necessity of living such awareness in loving service to all beings. It is a wisdom that fuses the highest mystical initiations with the most down - home celebration of life and a rugged commitment to social and political justice in all its forms. In other words, it is a wisdom that is never, as my old prep school headmaster would put it, ''''''''too divine to be of any earthly use.'''''''' - from the Foreword by Andrew Harvey Martin Buber, author of Tales of Hasidim, was the first to bring the Hasidic tales to life for modern readers in the middle of the twentieth century. His groundbreaking work was the first time that most readers had ever encountered the lives and teachings of these profound and enigmatic spiritual masters from Eastern Europe. In Hasidic Tales: Annotated & Explained, Rabbi Rami Shapiro breathes new life into these classic stories of people who so marvelously combined the mystical and the ordinary. Each demonstrates the spiritual power of unabashed joy, offers lessons for leading a holy life, and reminds you that the Divine can be found in the everyday. Without an expert guide, the allegorical quality of Hasidic Tales can be perplexing. But Shapiro presents them as stories rather than parables, making them accessible and meaningful. Now you can experience the wisdom of Hasidism firsthand even if you have no previous knowledge of Jewish spirituality. This SkyLight Illuminations edition offers insightful yet unobtrusive commentary that explains theological concepts, introduces major characters, offers clarifying references unfamiliar to most readers, and reveals how you can use the Hasidic tales to further your own spiritual awakening.

Higher Education Guidelines for Professional and Academic Staff Working with Student Veterans
The following guidelines are designed for professional and academic staff working with student veterans in the Australian higher education sector. For the purpose of these guidelines, we define a student veteran as any person who has served in the Australian Defence Force (Navy, Army, and Air Force) who is in higher education (Australian Student Veterans Association, 2019). We use the term collectively to include members who have discharged, as well as currently serving members and reservists. The guidelines are informed by the national project, ''From the military to the academy: supporting younger military veterans in Australian higher education'' (Harvey, Andrewartha, Sharp, Wyatt-Smith, Jones, Shore, & Simons, 2019). The project was led by La Trobe University''s Centre for Higher Education Equity and Diversity Research (CHEEDR), in collaboration with the Australian Student Veterans Association (ASVA), Australian Catholic University, Charles Darwin University, and Western Sydney University. The guidelines have also been shaped by a previous research project, ''Supporting younger veterans to succeed in higher education'', conducted by CHEEDR in collaboration with ASVA (Harvey, Andrewartha, Sharp, & Wyatt-Smith, 2018). As part of the research project, 240 student veterans completed a survey about their strengths, needs, and experiences. While both projects were focussed on public universities, many of the recommendations in these guidelines could also be applied to non-university higher education providers.
