Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs)

release date: Jul 01, 2022
Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs)
This book focuses on the relevance of non-fungible token-based products in the current hyper-digitalized and hyper-connected world. Connecting the new NFTs’ technologies with academic literature on marketing, the authors highlight future research streams as well as strategies and factors that marketers and managers can use to promote this new type of product. Starting with an overview of the nature and increasing importance of NFTs in marketing, the authors extensively examine the blockchain technology that underlies this new innovation along with its applications. Specifically, by reviewing the existing literature on NFTs, the authors explain the emerging topics and business opportunities offered by NFTs for intellectual property protection, development of new lifestyles, and forms of entertainment. The second part of the book investigates NFTs in three different contexts: art, music, and fashion. By exploring the key behavioral variables that underlie consumers’ intentions to purchase NFT-based products (i.e., materialism, status consumption orientation, innovativeness), the authors discuss the various implications for advertising and marketing strategies in such industries. Offering a state-of-the-art look at this new technology, this book presents a guide for scholars and anyone looking for an understanding of NFTs and the opportunities they present. With a preface by Russell Belk.

Feminisms in Development

release date: Jan 01, 2007
Feminisms in Development
This collection of essays by leading feminist thinkers from North and South constitutes a major new attempt to reposition feminism within development studies. Feminism's emphasis on social transformation makes it fundamental to development studies. Yet the relationship between the two disciplines has frequently been a troubled one. At present, the way in which many development institutions function often undermines feminist intent through bureaucratic structures and unequal power quotients. Moreover, the seeming intractability of inequalities and injustice in developing countries have presented feminists with some enormous challenges. Here, emphasizing the importance of a plurality of approaches, the authors argue for the importance of what 'feminisms' have to say to development. Confronting the enormous challenges for feminisms in development studies, this book provides real hope for dialogue and exchange between feminisms and development.

Knitspeak

release date: Sep 13, 2011
Knitspeak
This handy guide unravels the mysteries of terms, symbols, and abbreviations to make pattern reading easy for knitters of all levels. Knitting can be a challenging craft, but even more challenging than knitting itself is the cryptic language—a mix of abbreviations, numbers, jargon, punctuation marks, and other symbols—in which patterns are usually written. It’s no wonder so many beginners (and even some whose skills are quite advanced) are intimidated by the bewildering code—or that so many yarn-shop owners grow frustrated by the amount of time they must spend deciphering patterns for the uninitiated. Enter Knitspeak, a knitter’s dictionary that disentangles the mysteries of pattern language and translates it into plain English, helping knitters to easily transition from confused to confident. Andrea Berman Price’s essential guide—written in a friendly, reassuring tone and formatted for quick reference—begins with an overview of how knitting patterns are organized. It then offers a comprehensive alphabetical listing of all the abbreviations, words, phrases, and symbols typically encountered in patterns. Knitspeak’s many easy-to-understand drawings clarify basic and not-so-basic needle techniques, and a series of sidebars deals with issues ranging from keeping track of simultaneous shaping to substituting yarns and reading a yarn label. The book’s appendix is filled with valuable tips, charts, and worksheets.

The Four Books on Architecture

release date: Aug 23, 2002
The Four Books on Architecture
The Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio was one of the most influential figures that the field of architecture has ever produced. For classical architects, the term Palladian stands for a vocabulary of architectural forms embodying perfection and beauty. Of even greater significance than Palladio's buildings is his treatise I quattro libri dell'architettura (The Four Books On Architecture), the most successful architectural treatise of the Renaissance and one of the two or three most important books in the literature of architecture. First published in Italian in 1570, it has been translated into every major Western language. This is the first English translation of Palladio in over 250 years, making it the only translation available in modern English. Until now, English-language readers have had to rely mostly on a facsimile of Isaac Ware's 1738 translation and the eighteenth-century engravings prepared for that text. This new translation by Robert Tavernor and Richard Schofield contains Palladio's original woodcuts, reproduced in facsimile and positioned correctly, adjacent to the text. The book also contains a glossary that explains technical terms in their original context, a bibliography of recent Palladio research, and an introduction to Palladio and his times. The First Book discusses building materials and techniques, as well as the five orders of architecture: Tuscan, Doric, Ionic, Corinthian, and Composite. Palladio describes the characteristics of each order and illustrates them. The Second Book discusses private town houses and country estates, almost all designed by Palladio. The Third Book discusses streets, bridges, piazzas, and basilicas, most of ancient Roman origin. The Fourth Book discusses ancient Roman temples, including the Pantheon.

Urinary Stones

release date: Jan 01, 2002
Urinary Stones
Although methods of lithotripsy are effective in removing urinary stones, these methods can only treat the symptoms, not cure the disease. Depending on the nature of the stones, there is a recurrence rate of 60-100% if no follow-up measures are taken. With detailed knowledge of the causes of urinary stone formation, however, recurrences can largely be prevented. This handbook is designed to assist clinicians and health care professionals caring for patients with renal stones by guiding them through the appropriate diagnostic studies and the development of effective and safe plans for treatment and prevention. Its clear organization makes it simple to use as a reference work, and its practical value is enhanced by the outline format which facilitates the understanding of diagnostic studies and treatment plans. For the new edition all chapters have been revised in consideration of the authors own experiences, the results in the international literature and current European and international guidelines. Detailed tables for the relevant nutrients (calcium, uric acid, oxalate) of numerous foodstuffs and reference values for the urinary composition in children have been added. The authors have extensive experience in both urinary stone research and the development and practical application of therapeutic concepts. The close cooperation among physicians, clinical chemists, and nutritionists is a successful strategy in the prophylaxis of recurrent urinary stones.

The Succeeders
"This book--a story of social reproduction and change--illustrates how the larger ideological struggles over who belongs in this country, who is valuable, and who is an American are worked out by young people through their everyday acts of striving in school and caring for friends and family. It uses the experiences of everyday high schoolers, some undocumented and some from families with mixed legal standing, to understand the roles that education and a broad definition of achievement play in shaping how young people, who are today the focus of xenophobic ire, come to understand their national identity and sense of belonging to the United States"--

The Paper Moon: An Inspector Montalbano Novel 9

release date: Jul 20, 2005
The Paper Moon: An Inspector Montalbano Novel 9
Paper Moon is the thrilling ninth instalment in the Inspector Montalbano series, by Italian author Andrea Camilleri. Motionless, Montalbano waited for the surf to enter his brain and wash it clean with each breaker. At last the first light wave came like a caress, swiiissshhh, and carried away, glugluglug, Elena Sclafani and her beauty, while Michela Pardo's tits, belly, arched body and eyes likewise disappeared. Once Montalbano the man was erased, all that should remain was Inspector Montalbano - a kind of abstract function, the person who was supposed to solve the case and nothing more, with no personal feelings involved. But as he was telling himself this, he knew perfectly well that he could never pull it off. As he gets older, Inspector Montalbano is plagued by existential questions. But he doesn't have much time to wax philosophical before the gruesome murder of a man - shot in the face at point-blank range with his pants down - commands his attention. Add two evasive, beautiful women as prime suspects, dirty cocaine, dead politicians, mysterious computer codes, and a series of threatening letters, and things soon get very complicated at the police headquarters in Vigàta. Paper Moon is followed by the tenth book in the Inspector Montalbano series, August Heat. PRAISE FOR THE SERIES "A magnificent series of novels" Sunday Times "There's a deliciously playful quality to the mysteries Andrea Camilleri writes about a lusty Sicilian police detective named Salvo Montalbano." New York Times Book Review "Camilleri as crafty and charming a writer as his protagonist is an investigator." The Washington Post "The books are full of sharp, precise characterizations and with subplots that make Montalbano endearingly human ... Like the antipasti that Montalbano contentedly consumes, the stories are light and easily consumed, leaving one eager for the next course." New York Journal of Books "This series is distinguished by Camilleri's remarkable feel for tragicomedy, expertly mixing light and dark in the course of producing novels that are both comforting and disturbing." Desert Raiders

release date: Jul 24, 2007
Desert Raiders
Although harsh and inhospitable, the North African theater of World War II proved to be a perfect environment for irregular warfare and the deployment of Special Forces. Four countries took part in this 'shadow war': Great Britain, most successfully of all; Free France, including a surprising solitary campaign from Chad; Italy, mainly engaged in defending the Libyan southern line of communications; and Germany, operating an extensive spy network throughout Egypt. Andrea Molinari deals with the development and organization of these unique units, and examines how the conditions in North Africa affected the Special Forces of all the countries involved as unconventional units were increasingly used to fight in unconventional conditions in the depths of the "sea of sand" between Libya and Egypt. Accompanied by evocative wartime photography, comprehensive maps and detailed organizational charts, this is the first complete coverage of desert raiders on both sides of the war. With Dr. Duncan Anderson, Head of War Studies at the British military academy and leading military historian, acting as consulting editor, this book is a definitive analysis of the world's first Special Forces.
