The Lady of Shalott
Top 100 Classic Poems and Ballads - The Lady of Shalott - A Classic Victorian Ballad - Alfred Tennyson. "The Lady of Shalott" is a Victorian ballad by the English poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809–1892). Like his other early poems – "Sir Lancelot and Queen Guinevere" and "Galahad" – the poem recasts Arthurian subject matter loosely based on medieval sources. Tennyson wrote two versions of the poem, one published in 1833, of twenty stanzas, the other in 1842 of nineteen stanzas. The poem was loosely based on the Arthurian legend of Elaine of Astolat, as recounted in a thirteenth-century Italian novella titled Donna di Scalotta (No. LXXXII in the collection Cento Novelle Antiche), with the earlier version being closer to the source material than the later. Tennyson focused on the Lady''s "isolation in the tower and her decision to participate in the living world, two subjects not even mentioned in Donna di Scalotta."

Idylls of the King

release date: Sep 05, 1989
Idylls of the King
Tennyson had a life-long interest in the legend of King Arthur and after the huge success of his poem ''Morte d''Arthur'' he built on the theme with this series of twelve poems, written in two periods of intense creativity over nearly twenty years. Idylls of the King traces the story of Arthur''s rule, from his first encounter with Guinevere and the quest for the Holy Grail to the adultery of his Queen with Launcelot and the King''s death in a final battle that spells the ruin of his kingdom. Told with lyrical and dreamlike eloquence, Tennyson''s depiction of the Round Table reflects a longing for a past age of valour and chivalry. And in his depiction of King Arthur he created a hero imbued with the values of the Victorian age - one who embodies the highest ideals of manhood and kingship. Idylls of the King (Deseret Alphabet Edition)
Alfred Tennyson , First Baron Tennyson (1809-1892) was one of the most prominent English poets of the 19th century. From 1850 to his death, he was the Poet Laureate of Great Britain, the longest tenure of any Poet Laureate in British history. Idylls of the King is Tennyson''s definitive-but not only-treatment of the quintessential British mythos: the tales of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table. The material is largely derived from Thomas Mallory''s Morte d''Arthur and the Welsh Mabinogion, seen through a Victorian lens idealizing manly honor and feminine purity.
