Kennedy Institute for North American Studies), course: Kulturwissenschaft, language: English, abstract: This thesis examines the relatively recent and increasingly popular phenomenon of cringe comedy. The characteristic feature of cringe comedy is the exposure of the viewer to prolonged states of social discomfort in the form of vicarious embarrassment, framed in a faux-realist aesthetic. Appearing increasingly since the turn of the millennium, cringe comedies employ the prolonged suspension of discomfort, deviating from the traditional sitcom. Since academic research on the topic has been limited, this thesis incorporates theoretical perspectives on comedy, embarrassment and shame, television and cultural history, insights from the fields of humor research, affect theory, the sociology of emotions and psychology as well as cultural and media studies. Drawing upon these sources, the author attempts to situate cringe comedy within the late capitalist comedic landscape, and analyze it as an aesthetic bound to the post-Fordist traits of hyperflexibility, hyperperformance and the increasingly blurred lines between work and play. The common experiential thread shared by cringe comedy shows is the endurance – on the part of the viewer – of a kind of voluntary shame stasis, provoked by repeated social faux pas, mixed with desperation and failure, and rarely ending in a comforting comedic resolution. These moments provide an interesting diversion from the usual hyperflexible performances of the late capitalist stage. In allowing for prolonged and awkward gaps, refusing to quickly fill them with socially scripted comfort, and delaying or altogether avoiding a return to a smooth equilibrium, cringe comedy grants us time to question the current methods of managing affective imbalance. In the words of Elspeth Probyn, the benefit of shame (as performed and triggered in these comedies) could be the introduction of “acute sensitivity“ (2) towards ourselves and others. Pure inductive logic is the study of rational probability treated as a branch of mathematical logic. This monograph, the first devoted to this approach, brings together the key results from the past seventy years plus the main contributions of the authors and their collaborators over the last decade to present a comprehensive account of the discipline within a single unified context. The exposition is structured around the traditional bases of rationality, such as avoiding Dutch Books, respecting symmetry and ignoring irrelevant information. The authors uncover further rationality concepts, both in the unary and in the newly emerging polyadic languages, such as conformity, spectrum exchangeability, similarity and language invariance. For logicians with a mathematical grounding, this book provides a complete self-contained course on the subject, taking the reader from the basics up to the most recent developments. It is also a useful reference for a wider audience from philosophy and computer science.

While there are languages that code a particular grammatical role (e.g. subject or direct object) in one and the same way across the board, many more languages code the same grammatical roles differentially. The variables which condition the differential argument marking (or DAM) pertain to various properties of the NP (such as animacy or definiteness) or to event semantics or various properties of the clause. While the main line of current research on DAM is mainly synchronic the volume tackles the diachronic perspective. The tenet is that the emergence and the development of differential marking systems provide a different kind of evidence for the understanding of the phenomenon. The present volume consists of 18 chapters and primarily brings together diachronic case studies on particular languages or language groups including e.g. Finno-Ugric, Sino-Tibetan and Japonic languages. The volume also includes a position paper, which provides an overview of the typology of different subtypes of DAM systems, a chapter on computer simulation of the emergence of DAM and a chapter devoted to the cross-linguistic effects of referential hierarchies on DAM. Lviv is a city in western Ukraine and a UNESCO world heritage site. Founded in the late Middle Ages by King Danylo and named after his son Lev, Lviv has thrived as a major commercial and religious centre, attracting artists, craftsmen, and intellectuals from all over the world. The influences of this multi-ethnic tapestry – Ukrainian, Armenian, German, Jewish, Polish, Italian and Austrian – are felt in the city today in its majestic boulevards, charming squares, and vibrant café culture. This book is a result of two trips to Ukraine between 2013 and 2014. Lviv was not meant to be my final destination, but once there I could not resist the temptation to linger, to wander its winding cobblestone streets, and to reflect on what makes this place cast such a spell on its visitors. Before long I realised that although Lviv’s Art Nouveau buildings, Gothic churches, Renaissance mansions, and Baroque monuments give it a distinctive ambiance, it is the people that make this town special: laughing and praying, rushing on their daily errands, and slowing down to enjoy a drink; welcoming children into the world and seeing young men off to war – life in Lviv is intense and touching. I hereby share my humble declaration of love for Lviv, a hidden treasure in the heart of Europe.

The English Question, language: English, abstract: Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, die Ursprünge und Traditionen der englischen Küche zu untersuchen und eventuelle Beziehungen zur Ernährung der Engländer heutzutage aufzuzeigen. Dabei wird die Historie des englischen Essens bis in römische Zeiten zurückverfolgt und ihre Entwicklung dann bis in die heutige Zeit untersucht. Stereotypische Konzepte wie die Vorliebe der Engländer für weißes Brot, Fleisch und der oftmals kritisierte ''fade Geschmack'' englischen Essens sollen ebenfalls untersucht werden. Am Ende der Arbeit soll diskutiert werden, ob es so etwas wie ''typisch'' englische Küche überhaupt gibt und, wenn ja, worin sich diese widerspiegelt und von, beispielsweise, der schottischen oder walisischen Küche unterscheidet.

''Hana'' van Alena Mornštajnová is een aangrijpende oorlogsroman over een Tsjechisch meisje en haar tante. De negenjarige Mira maakt in 1954 een grote fout waardoor ze als wees achterblijft tijdens een epidemie in Mezirící, Tsjecho-Slowakije. Haar excentrieke tante Hana is de enige familie die ze nog heeft, maar die vermijdt toenadering en zwijgt altijd. Ze kleedt zich altijd in het zwart en verlaat haar huis nooit. Mira begrijpt niets van haar, maar heeft geen andere keus dan bij haar in te trekken. Hana lijdt onder de ondoordachte keuze die ze in 1943 maakte als verliefd tienermeisje. Deze keuze had voor haar familie verstrekkende gevolgen en nog steeds draagt ze schuldgevoel met zich mee. The focus of this tri-authored scholarly work is on marketing communication and consumer behaviour of the selected generations X, Y, and Z in terms of the size of purchases and the types of retail outlets they use. The main part of the book deals with theoretical aspects of retail business and with marketing communication and consumer behaviour of specific generations in the retail sector. The main outcome lies in identifying the optimal location of retail units in combination with customer service to be provided to selected generations and the market potential of the buying gradient in terms of competitors'' impacts. The book also focuses on applying the results of the analyses whilst outlining the potential of the prediction models of generational tendencies towards the realisation of purchases in relation to marketing communication of the retail sector and its subsequent stimulation.
