"So funny, it hurts". Cringe Comedy and Performances of Discomfort

"So funny, it hurts". Cringe Comedy and Performances of Discomfort
Master''s Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Cultural Studies - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,0, Free University of Berlin (John F. Kennedy Institute for North American Studies), course: Kulturwissenschaft, language: English, abstract: This thesis examines the relatively recent and increasingly popular phenomenon of cringe comedy. The characteristic feature of cringe comedy is the exposure of the viewer to prolonged states of social discomfort in the form of vicarious embarrassment, framed in a faux-realist aesthetic. Appearing increasingly since the turn of the millennium, cringe comedies employ the prolonged suspension of discomfort, deviating from the traditional sitcom. Since academic research on the topic has been limited, this thesis incorporates theoretical perspectives on comedy, embarrassment and shame, television and cultural history, insights from the fields of humor research, affect theory, the sociology of emotions and psychology as well as cultural and media studies. Drawing upon these sources, the author attempts to situate cringe comedy within the late capitalist comedic landscape, and analyze it as an aesthetic bound to the post-Fordist traits of hyperflexibility, hyperperformance and the increasingly blurred lines between work and play. The common experiential thread shared by cringe comedy shows is the endurance – on the part of the viewer – of a kind of voluntary shame stasis, provoked by repeated social faux pas, mixed with desperation and failure, and rarely ending in a comforting comedic resolution. These moments provide an interesting diversion from the usual hyperflexible performances of the late capitalist stage. In allowing for prolonged and awkward gaps, refusing to quickly fill them with socially scripted comfort, and delaying or altogether avoiding a return to a smooth equilibrium, cringe comedy grants us time to question the current methods of managing affective imbalance. In the words of Elspeth Probyn, the benefit of shame (as performed and triggered in these comedies) could be the introduction of “acute sensitivity“ (2) towards ourselves and others. While numerous cringe comedy shows will be referenced, the main analysis centers on the 2005/2014 HBO series The Comeback.

Decentralized Finance (DeFi)

release date: Aug 26, 2023
Decentralized Finance (DeFi)
This book explores how decentralized finance (DeFi) can disrupt traditional centralized finance including the business areas of insurance companies, banks, money markets, and bonds. DeFi is not a company or a single product, rather it is a collection of products or services. As part of the Ethereum ecosystem, DeFi services are provided as Decentralized Applications (dApps), which require smart contracts to lock in assets for processing transactions. Changing consumer expectations, the availability of affordable technologies, and entrepreneurial drive create space for DeFi. Geopolitical crises and trust deterioration exacerbate the need. This book explains the concept of DeFi, the technological opportunities, the current reality and status quo of business transactions, and demonstrates the potential for future use and the eventual transformation of the financial industry. It further provides a comprehensive analysis of the real-world applications of DeFi, the Decentralized Ledger Technology (DLT), and digital assets, as well as their potential risks to consumers and financial institutions to bankers, managers, investors, and policymakers.

Being a Woman and Being Tatar

release date: Sep 04, 2024
Being a Woman and Being Tatar
Being a Woman and Being Tatar uses ethnographic research to explore the multifaceted and complex identities – such as gender, ethnicity, religion – of Tatar women in Siberia and Estonia. Focusing on the intersections and interactions of multiple identities and exploring that focus through Tatar women’s own voices, narratives, and subjectivity, this book unfolds women’s stories about what it means to be a woman and to be a Tatar in a post-Soviet situation through narrations of their aspirations, their sexuality, their relationship with relatives, and the dynamics of power and hierarchy they feel themselves within. It explores how identity and tradition are shaped by state politics, and also brings attention to new geographical areas, including the Tyumen region and Estonia. Being a Woman and Being Tatar will demonstrate to those studying gender studies and cultural anthropology the intricacies of Tatar women’s identities, and invites readers to better understand the Tatar women’s diversity across Eastern Europe and Russia.

Mercy House

Mercy House
“Never underestimate the power of a group of women. Fierce, thoughtful and dramatic—this is a story of true courage." —Susan Wiggs, New York Times bestselling author She would stop at nothing to protect the women under her care. Inside a century-old row house in Brooklyn, renegade Sister Evelyn and her fellow nuns preside over a safe haven for the abused and abandoned. Gruff and indomitable on the surface, warm and wry underneath, little daunts Evelyn, until she receives word that Mercy House will be investigated by Bishop Hawkins, a man with whom she shares a dark history. In order to protect everything they’ve built, the nuns must conceal many of their methods, which are forbidden by the Catholic Church. Evelyn will go to great lengths to defend all that she loves. She confronts a gang member, defies the church, challenges her own beliefs, and faces her past. She is bolstered by the other nuns and the vibrant, diverse residents of the shelter—Lucia, Mei-Li, Desiree, Esther, and Katrina—whose differences are outweighed by what unites them: they’ve all been broken by men but are determined to rebuild. Amidst her fight, Evelyn discovers the extraordinary power of mercy and the grace it grants, not just to those who receive it, but to those strong enough to bestow it.

Tourism as Memory-Making

release date: Mar 14, 2025
Tourism as Memory-Making
Until recently the Russian Federation used to be one of the largest markets for outbound travel. Among Russians’ favourite destinations were cities that used to be part of the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union, and are now located in the independent nation-states bordering Russia. This open access book provides an empirically rich and conceptually sophisticated account of the mnemonic interactions between Russians and their neighbours in the shadow of empire and geopolitical confrontations. Based on extensive ethnographic research with tourists and tour guides in the cities of Tallinn, Kyiv, and Almaty before Russia’s full-scale war on Ukraine, it analyses the practices through which cultural memories are performed in tourism encounters, as well as the forms they take. Imperial nostalgia, the production and consumption of national pasts, and memory diplomacy are discussed as key modes of remembering in tourism. Through the case of Russian tourism, the book argues for an invigoration of research on memory and tourism, which despite the significance of tourism for the circulation of cultural memories has so far received surprisingly little attention. Bringing debates in memory, heritage and tourism studies into a dialogue, the book expands the field of study beyond museums and heritage sites and puts forward a transnational approach that acknowledges diverse and entangled modes of remembering in tourism, situates memory-making in a wider political context and reflects on its geopolitical implications.

Diachrony of Differential Argument Marking

release date: Oct 09, 2020
Diachrony of Differential Argument Marking
While there are languages that code a particular grammatical role (e.g. subject or direct object) in one and the same way across the board, many more languages code the same grammatical roles differentially. The variables which condition the differential argument marking (or DAM) pertain to various properties of the NP (such as animacy or definiteness) or to event semantics or various properties of the clause. While the main line of current research on DAM is mainly synchronic the volume tackles the diachronic perspective. The tenet is that the emergence and the development of differential marking systems provide a different kind of evidence for the understanding of the phenomenon. The present volume consists of 18 chapters and primarily brings together diachronic case studies on particular languages or language groups including e.g. Finno-Ugric, Sino-Tibetan and Japonic languages. The volume also includes a position paper, which provides an overview of the typology of different subtypes of DAM systems, a chapter on computer simulation of the emergence of DAM and a chapter devoted to the cross-linguistic effects of referential hierarchies on DAM. Lviv

Lviv
Lviv is a city in western Ukraine and a UNESCO world heritage site. Founded in the late Middle Ages by King Danylo and named after his son Lev, Lviv has thrived as a major commercial and religious centre, attracting artists, craftsmen, and intellectuals from all over the world. The influences of this multi-ethnic tapestry – Ukrainian, Armenian, German, Jewish, Polish, Italian and Austrian – are felt in the city today in its majestic boulevards, charming squares, and vibrant café culture. This book is a result of two trips to Ukraine between 2013 and 2014. Lviv was not meant to be my final destination, but once there I could not resist the temptation to linger, to wander its winding cobblestone streets, and to reflect on what makes this place cast such a spell on its visitors. Before long I realised that although Lviv’s Art Nouveau buildings, Gothic churches, Renaissance mansions, and Baroque monuments give it a distinctive ambiance, it is the people that make this town special: laughing and praying, rushing on their daily errands, and slowing down to enjoy a drink; welcoming children into the world and seeing young men off to war – life in Lviv is intense and touching. I hereby share my humble declaration of love for Lviv, a hidden treasure in the heart of Europe.

After almost 400 years, the well-known long-lost painting Leda and the Swan by the Rudophine master Joseph Heintz has resurfaced. It is an artwork, which was most respected by Heintz''s contemporaries and was considered lost for good. Three preparatory drawings for this painting are known, one of them owned by the National Gallery in Prague. Joseph Heintz the Elder (1564, Basel - 1609, Prague) was a prominent artist and court painter of Emperor Rudolph II in Prague but he also made a name for himself in Augsburg, Germany. When his peak artwork Leda and the Swan was re-discovered, three art institutions - the Kunstsammlungen und Museen Augsburg, the National Gallery in Prague and the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, Austria - have agreed to organize separate small exhibitions, respectively, on the theme of this painting. One was held in the spring in Augsburg, where Heintz had worked as a painter, inventor of prints and also architect. Another exhibition will be held in 2016 in Vienna, where a large part of Rudolph II''s imperial collections have survived. We prepare our exhibition in the autumn in Prague, where Heintz worked in the imperial services. The small exhibition in Prague will present Joseph Heintz the Elder as an artist through his selected artworks. The National Gallery in Prague will display his well-known painting Leda and the Swan (it will be loaned from a collection abroad) with its preparatory drawing as well as other paintings, drawings and graphic sheets. We will also offer more stories linked with the painting''s theme, the classical myth about Leda, the beautiful queen of Sparta, and her encounter with Jupiter, the highest god on Mount Olympus.
