James and the Mystery of the Vanishing Honey Moon

James and the Mystery of the Vanishing Honey Moon
James (7) and his sisters, Ellen (5) and Rebecca (1), are asked to be a pageboy and bridesmaids at their auntie''s wedding. They then overhear their Mum and auntie discuss details of the wedding and the planned honeymoon.James'' sisters are confused by what their auntie means by a ''honeymoon''. James, having a vivid imagination, makes up a story that he tells his sisters at bedtime. This story is all about the Moon that they can see every night up in the sky. This is, in fact, made out of honey, which is why, James says, it''s really called the ''Honey Moon''. Then, one day when James is looking for possible presents for his upcoming birthday, he comes across a small, silver telescope in a toy shop in town. The shopkeeper, who James refers to as the Toy Keeper, tells him that it''s a magic telescope. Hearing that, there''s no doubt in James'' mind that this is top of his wish list. Luckily for him, Mum and Dad buy it for him and he gets it on his birthday. That first evening as he looks through it from his bedroom window at the Moon, James is, somehow, magically transported to the Honey Moon. His made-up story is coming to life! Suddenly, the Toy Keeper appears and introduces himself as Gabe. There on the Honey Moon, the two then meet with Queen Bee and her subjects, the Honey Bees, who live there. They already know Gabe. Before he knows it, James is awoken by his Mum. He''s overslept and may be late for school. Was it all a dream? That night, James continues telling his sisters his ''Honey Moon'' bedtime story and, as part of this latest story, he tells them about Gabe, Queen Bee and that his small, silver, telescope is magical. Together, the three siblings take it in turns to look through it and, just like James before the previous time, they are all magically transported to the Honey Moon. There Queen Bee comes to meet them once more. They learn from her that the planet is in danger from being eaten up by another group of creatures, called the Honey Badgers, who also live there. Can James, Ellen and Rebecca help save it?Moral of the Story: While the Honey Moon is a fictional place, James and the Honey Moon could quite easy be set on our own planet, Earth. If it had not have been for James and his sisters, the honey that formed the Honey Moon would have all been used up by the Honey Badgers. The planet itself would have ceased to exist and Queen Bee and the Honey Bees, including Acacia, Manuka and Buckwheat would have needed to find a new place to live. Roger, the King of the Honey Badgers, did not realise the damage he and his subjects were unintentionally causing to their planet. Like Roger, many of us do not realise the damage we are unintentionally causing to the Earth. We can all do our bit, no matter how young or old and rich or poor we are. Whether we are an individual or a business, we can each ensure that we look after our planet and not only use its minerals, treasures and components in a sustainable way, but are as green as we possibly can be when disposing of our waste. If we each do our bit, then together we can make a big difference and, as Roger discovered, we can not only ensure that our planet is a beautiful place for us all to live our lives on, but that it remains a beautiful place for our children, grandchildren and future generations to also enjoy. In writing James and the Mystery of the Vanishing Honey Moon, I hope that this story will play its part in helping everyone that reads it appreciate that our planet is precious, and, like Roger, they can make a difference

Kypan

release date: Jan 06, 2016
Kypan
Kypan''s mission was to hunt down those who had traitorously tried to overthrow the Alliance. Their ambition being to assume control of the now defeated Rathen empire and become its new overlords. After the Alliance had voted to help the surviving planetary populations resume self rule and restore those worlds to viability. The Alliance had come into being in the face of the all consuming Rathen empire''s expansion, potential enemies had to join forces or be consumed. The Rathen regarded all other races as lesser and unnecessary, genocide was their normal practice, even those they enslaved slowly died out from neglect or the damage done to their environment. This political movement called themselves the By Right of Conquest group, Rightists for short. Having failed to gain their ends politically they began a deadly civil war, by attacking the seat of government. They thought themselves guaranteed success with their massive fleet out numbering the defenders seven to one. Less than ten percent of the Rightist fleet escaped the wrath of the battle hardened veterans sworn to protect the Alliance constitution. Kypan is one of those veterans hunting down the last remnants of the Rightist criminal fugitives, he simply called them traitors, wannabe new emperors of an old evil empire. Kypan''s current lead was taking him to a strange planet called Earth, populated by an insane race that called themselves human. Everyone knew they were certifiable enough to detonate nuclear weapons inside their own biosphere, only the desperate and criminal willingly visited such a planet.

Design and Development of a Telemetry Logging System

Design and Development of a Telemetry Logging System
This report documents the design and development of a telemetry logging system that formats and records analog and digital data from rocketborne instruments. The main objective in the development of this system was to improve data acquisition capability so on-the-spot data plots of the instrument measurements would be available for quick-look analyses. The system design includes an explanation of the controller-subcontroller design concept with schematic illustrations and processed data samples. (Author).

'Sacrifice Zones' in the Green Energy Economy

release date: Jan 01, 2018
'Sacrifice Zones' in the Green Energy Economy
The environmental justice movement validates the grassroots struggles of residents of places which Steve Lerner refers to as “sacrifice zones”: low-income and racialized communities shouldering more than their fair share of environmental harms related to pollution, contamination, toxic waste, and heavy industry. On this account, disparities in wealth and power, often inscribed and re-inscribed through social processes of racialization, are understood to produce disparities in environmental burdens. Here, we attempt to understand how these dynamics are shifting in the green energy economy under settler colonial capitalism. We consider the possibility that the political economy of green energy contains its own sacrifice zones. Drawing on preliminary empirical research undertaken in southwestern Ontario in 2015, we document local resistance to renewable energy projects. Residents mounted campaigns against wind turbines based on suspected health effects and against solar farms based on arable land and food justice concerns, and in both cases, grounded their resistance in a generalized claim, which might be termed a “right to landscape”. We conclude that this resistance, contrary to typical framings which dismiss it as NIMBYism, has resonances with broader claims about environmental justice and may signal larger structural shifts worth devoting scholarly attention to. In the end, however, we do not wholly accept the sacrifice zone characterization of this resistance either, as our analysis reveals it to be far more complex and ambiguous than such a framing allows. But we maintain that taking this resistance seriously, rather than treating it as merely obstructionist to a transition away from fossil capitalism, reveals a counter-hegemonic potential at its core. There are seeds in this resistance with the power to push back on the deepening of capitalist relations that would otherwise be ushered in by an uncritical embrace of “green energy” enthusiasm.

Liberatory Technologies for Whom? Exploring a New Generation of Makerspaces Defined by Institutional Encounters
Makerspaces are subjects in a plurality of institutional advances and developments. What kinds of hybrid arrangements emerge through these encounters, and what becomes of the occupied factories for peer production theory? Makerspaces are subjects in a plurality of institutional advances and developments, catching the imaginations of a wide variety of organisations and other actors drawn to a buzz of enticing possibilities. Depending upon the nature of the encounter, makerspaces are becoming cradles for entrepreneurship, innovators in education, nodes in open hardware networks, studios for digital artistry, ciphers for social change, prototyping shops for manufacturers, remanufacturing hubs in circular economies, twenty-first century libraries, emblematic anticipations of commons-based, peer-produced post capitalism, workshops for hacking technology and its politics, laboratories for smart urbanism, galleries for hands-on explorations in material culture... not forgetting, of course, spaces for simply having fun. What kinds of hybrid arrangements emerge through these encounters, and what becomes of the occupied factories for peer production theory? How are institutions reshaping aspirations for autonomous, even democratic, fabrication and experimentation - aspirations that were - and are - important parts of makerspace narratives? And what do these encounters mean for institutions, whether in education, culture, business, development or some other sphere; how are they too evolving through their exposure to grassroots and community making practices? This introduction to Journal of Peer Production Special Issue 12: Makerspaces and Institutions discusses different methods for exploring these institutional developments in all their complexity through the launch of 13 research articles (each of which have been peer reviewed and revised through the Journal''s particularly transparent process, which makes all review steps public) and 7 practitioner contributions from key leaders working in the field.

The Man who Built the Swordfish

release date: Jan 01, 2019
The Man who Built the Swordfish
"Sir Richard Fairey was one of the great aviation innovators of the twentieth century. His career as a plane maker stretched from the Edwardian period to the jet age - he lived long enough to see one of his aircraft be the first to break the 1000mph barrier; and at least one of his designs, the Swordfish, holds iconic status. A qualified engineer, party to the design, development, and construction of the Royal Navy''s state-of-the-art sea planes, Sir Richard founded Fairey Aviation at the Admiralty''s behest in 1915. His company survived post-war retrenchment to become one of Britain''s largest aircraft manufacturers. The firm built a succession of front-line aircraft for the RAF and the Fleet Air Arm, including the iconic Swordfish. In addition, Fairey Aviation designed and built several cutting-edge experimental aircraft, including long-distance record-breakers between the wars and the stunningly beautiful Delta 2, which broke the world speed record on the eve of Sir Richard''s death in 1956. Fairey also came to hold a privileged position in the British elite - courting politicians and policymakers. He became a figurehead of the British aviation industry and his successful running of the British Air Commission earned him a knighthood. A key player at a pivotal moment, Fairey''s life tells us much about the exercise of power in early twentieth-century Britain and provides an insight into the nature of the British aviation manufacturing industry at its wartime peak and on the cusp of its twilight years." -- Provided by publisher.
