Pyrolysis Oils from Biomass

release date: Jan 01, 1988
Pyrolysis Oils from Biomass
Brings together specialists to present the state-of-the-science in the complete fuel cycle--from feedstock to upgraded liquid fuels suitable for replacements for petroleum-derived fuels. Offers a discussion of biomass pyrolysis and its place in the renewable fuel economy. Presents the technology of pyrolysis oil production. Describes analysis of the oils by characterization, kinetics, and chromatographic techniques. Concludes with a discussion of upgrading pyrolysis oils to liquid fuels.

Alcohol Co-production from Tree Crops

Alcohol Co-production from Tree Crops
A concept for the sustainable production of alcohol from fermentable substrates produced on an annual basis by the reproductive organs (pods, fruits, nuts, berries, etc.) of "tree crops" is presented. The advantages of tree-crop systems include suitability for use on marginal land, potential productivity equivalent to row crops, minimal maintenance and energy-input requirements, environmental compatability, and the possibility of co-product production. Honeylocust, mesquite, and persimmon are examined as potential U.S. tree-crop species. Fermentation of tree-crop organs and the economics of tree-crop systems are also discussed.

Vaporization Kinetics and Thermodynamics of Graphite Using the High Pressure Mass Spectrometer
The report describes efforts to characterize the vaporization of graphite, with present emphasis on observing equilibrium ratios of carbon clusters at temperatures exceeding 3000K. An all-carbon Knudsen cell, described earlier, was used with a modified current concentrator and an improved viewing arrangement for the pyrometer. The report describes the work accomplished in testing the modified apparatus and the results of the first species-ratio measurements carried out in the previous quarter. The research is for the purpose to design a mass spectrometer. (Author).

The Energy of Polymerization of the Gaseous Alkali Halides

The Energy of Polymerization of the Gaseous Alkali Halides
In the beginning of this project we set out to study the mechanism of evaporation of fused salts, as one part of the general problem of transfer of matter from condensed to gaseous phases. That is, we intended to explore the details of the process by which molecules left the surface of a liquid salt and entered the gas. It was hoped that knowledge about the nature of the molecules evaporating would give some idea of the structure of the liquid salt.
