Originally published in 1987, the purpose of Stress, Crowding, and Blood Pressure in Prison was to present, in a single location, the rationale, background, methods, principal results, analyses, interpretations, and conclusions of the authors’ studies at Massachusetts correctional institutions. Employing a longitudinal method for studying 568 inmates, the authors drew on psychological, social and health sciences assessments to identify the effects of housing mode, prison employment, leisure activities, disciplinary actions, and personal and sociodemographic characteristics to identify what was particularly stressful for inmates. Russian Reactions to German Airpower in World War II, first published in 1964, Generalleutnant a. D. Klaus Uebe, and revised and edited by Mr. Harry Fletcher, is one of a series of historical studies written for the United States Air Force Historical Division by men who had been key officers in the German Air Force during World War II. The overall purpose of the series is threefold: 1) To provide the United States Air Force with a comprehensive and, insofar as possible, authoritative history of a major air force which suffered defeat in World War II; 2) to provide a history of that air force as prepared by many of its principal and responsible leader; 3) to provide a firsthand account of that air force’s unique combat in a major war with the forces of the Soviet Union. This series of studies therefore covers in large part virtually all phases of the Luftwaffe’s operations and organization, from its camouflaged origin in the Reichswehr, during the period of secret German rearmament following World War I, through its participation in the Spanish Civil War and its massive operations and final defeat in World War II.

Germany’s imaginative employment of transport aircraft in World War II produced as many innovations as Germany’s use of tanks. Indeed, like the tank, the transport aircraft was closely associated with the Blitzkrieg concept. This relationship was advantageous at the outset of the war, but it became dangerous as the war dragged on and German armies outran their surface supply lines in North Africa and Russia. Then ground commanders began to think of air transport as the means of supply. The history of this trend is one of the main themes of this study, which was first published in its English translation in 1961. Some of the questions embodied in this theme—How much air transport is enough? Under what conditions is an air-supply operation feasible? What are the prerequisites for a successful airlift to encircled ground forces? What are the advantages and limitations of the glider?—are as vital and controversial today as they were during World War II. Generalmajor a. D. Fritz Morzik, who began his military career as a non-commissioned officer in the German Air Service in World War I and ended it as Armed Forces Chief of Air Transport in World War II, is especially well-qualified to write the present study. His long career, spanning two world wars, and his experience with both civilian and military transport aircraft testify to the breadth of his practical knowledge.

Our dad Phil enlisted in the U.S. Navy on April 1, 1946 at the age of 17. While serving, he wrote a series of one hundred eleven letters dated from April 3, 1946 through January 9, 1948, to Ann, his love. This book is comprised of those letters. Cellular communication is mediated by extracellular stimuli that bind cellular receptors and activate intracellular signaling pathways. Principal biochemical reactions used for signal transduction are protein or lipid phosphorylation, proteolytic cleavage, protein degradation and complex formation mediated by protein-protein interactions. Within the nucleus, signaling pathways regulate transcription factor activity and gene expression. Cells differ in their competence to respond to extracellular stimuli. A deeper understanding of complex biological responses cannot be achieved by traditional approaches but requires the combination of experimental data with mathematical modeling. Following a systems biology approach, data-based mathematical models describing sub-modules of signaling pathways have been established. By combining computer simulations with experimental verification systems properties of signaling pathway including cycling behavior or threshold response could be identified. Yet, to analyze complex growth and maturation processes at a systems level and quantitatively predict the outcome of perturbations further advances in experimental and theoretical methodologies are required.
